I took my 9 year old daughter to the match for the first time last night...won't happen again for a long time after the shameful songs about Jimmy Saville from BOTH sets of supporters.

To use a vile individual like that with all that he did to abuse children and then sing about it as if it was funny - and incredibly many people around us were laughing at the sick chants...very very disappointing.

I have been a Sunderland fan since I was little and that is the first time in 40 years of supporting them that I have been ashamed of a section of our own fans...well out of order:-(

Does your daughter even know who Jimmy Saville is or was?? Or what he did? Not sure it makes that much difference mate - the song was quite funny when the mags sang it at first but it was boring last night - and the thick Boro fans obviously don't realise that it was a dig at their locality not just at the player (I.e. effectively saying Saville must be from Boro as he's a peadophile)

I agree the songs are disgusting but no swearwords are used and my brother took his son (who is 8) and had no problem with it - it's football banter mate

It was not us, it was the Boro fans re Cattermole.

They only had 3 songs, although that was 3 more than us.

Atmosphere was utter pipe, I'm gonna give my season card to someone for Sat & try the South, flat as a fart would be a lie, sometimes farts are quite lively.

I just thought the chants were very unimaginative. Never gone in for the chanting thing, not my style.
I was however offended by three scrots sat in front of me. Horrible little racist ****ers. Couldn't even give them a slap cos they were about 15. And the copper who watched them but did nowt. Jail can't come soon enough for some.

The atmosphere wasn't that much better in the South Stand..It wasn't just the players who were not up for this one from the start, and with the utter dross on show it just got worse as the game went on.
The one time in the 2nd half when the players, and more particularly the crowd looked like gathering a head of steam, the Boro players just took turns to roll around and stop the game, which had the desired effect of putting the crowd back into its slumber.

There is a distinct amount of irony in that as the chants by Newcastle were referenced only to Catts due to his homeland being Middlesbrough (according to a few of my Geordie mates) so basically Boro fans were singing a song about a player who was born in Boro - the song takes the piss out of this but weren't the people singing it from the same place????!!!

This has to be another mag wind up surely? If you really have been around 40 years as you say then you heard 50 times worse at Roker pal against blacks, gays, foreigners and anyone really not from Southwick etc (although in your case it would be Sid James Park).

I'm not saying I agree with some of the chanting today but its tame as **** compared to the 70's, 80's and even the 90's and your daugther (mine is 8 years old in February and going to her first game with me on Saturday for which I have no reservations) will hear much worse when she goes to the big school in just a couple of years chum.

A 9 year old wouldn't understand 'Saville is Cattermoles dad'.

They'd not think a thing of it.

For what it is worth I have suffered plenty of abuse as a Sunderland fan supporting my team in the Newcastle area, including physical violence at school and verbal abuse at work. I was born in Sunderland, had a season ticket whilst we were in the 3rd division and sat outside all night for Semi Final tickets...aswell as sat crying on the drive when Mickey G missed.

Anyone paying attention would have heard the very obvious chorus of "Jimmy Saville, he's one of your own" from our fans on at least 2 occasions. So I have the cheek to complain at not wanting to explain the subject of child abuse to my 9 yr old daughter at her first football match. the response on here...it must be a mag wind up...you are so wrong and paranoid as to be embarassing. Good luck on Saturday and when you hear the swearing, abuse etc. I hope your daughter doesn't ask the same questions mine did.

Just cos someone has an opinion doesn't mean it is a wind up.

But you must know why? Middlesbrough had a very bad press because of 2 doctors Dr Marietta Higgs and Dr Geoffrey Wyatt

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cleveland_child_abuse_scandal

read it yourself will be easier, Most of it was bullshit but **** sticks, but if they were taking the piss out of cats, then it must not bother them too much I have to say.

but i have to agree with cest, its a football match, if you dont like whats said dont go.

A group of us are moving away from the south stand because of racist chanting during the mags game,

I heard that it was going on again last night.
