Hello and welcome to the official match thread for Wednesday’s Capital One Cup fourth round encounter between Liverpool & Swansea City. The game is scheduled to take place at Anfield on Wednesday 31st of October 2012 with a kick-off time of 8.00PM. The game isn’t scheduled to be shown on English T.V but streams will be posted on this thread before & during the game. BBC Radio Five Live Sports Extra have the radio rights to the game.

    Preview.

The Capital One Cup enters the fourth round stage this week and one of the ties sees Brendan Rodgers welcoming one of his former sides to Anfield.

Liverpool host Swansea City at Anfield on Wednesday with both sides looking to secure their passage into the fifth round of the Capital One Cup. The Liverpool manager, Brendan Rodgers, will be welcoming his former side, Swansea City, to Anfield in what will be his first meeting with Swansea since leaving for Liverpool in June.

Rodgers could be in line for an ‘interesting’ reception from the Swansea fans in the Anfield Road End. Most Swansea fans didn’t begrudge Rodgers the move to Liverpool but almost all Swansea fans weren’t happy with Rodgers coming back to take the Welsh international midfielder Joe Allen with him to Anfield.

Especially considering the well reported clause that was included in the deal when Rodgers left Swansea that stated that Rodgers couldn’t come back for any Swansea City players within a 12-month period...

That clause didn’t work. A month and nine days passed before Allen joined Rodgers at Liverpool after completing a move reported to be worth £15M.

This means Rodgers isn’t held in the best regards with Swansea fans despite his undoubted success at the Liberty Stadium. Having taken Swansea City to the Premier League (The first Welsh club to do that) and kept them there with a excellent 11th place finish, his on-field success is clear for all to see.

The home side, Liverpool, will be looking to progress in this competition and take another step towards defending the title they won last season. Despite Liverpool being the current holders, there is expected to be changes from the side that played Everton on Sunday.

In Liverpool’s previous Capital One Cup game against West Bromwich Albion, there was a strong mix of younger & more experienced players but with the main focus being on the younger players. The likes of Andre Wisdom, Jack Robinson, Daniel Pacheco & Samed Yesil all got some minutes under their belts in that game.

Add to this the more experienced campaigners such as Brad Jones, Jamie Carragher, Nuri Sahin & Stewart Downing and there was a good mix of younger & older players in the squad.

This formula worked for Rodgers & Liverpool as Liverpool battled from 1-0 down to come out 2-1 winners courtesy of goals from Nuri Sahin.

This sort of formula would be expected to be used for tomorrow’s game. Players such as Jack Robinson, Daniel Pacheco, Samed Yesil, Jamie Carragher & Stewart Downing could all expect some significant minutes and it gives them a chance to impress Rodgers and maybe force their way into contention for Sunday’s Barclays Premier League game with Newcastle United.

Rodgers has put his faith in the youngsters this season and has spoken about bringing the younger players into the first-team if they impress in training and the games they are involved in.

A game such as this is a great opportunity for those younger players to push for a first-team slot and emulate the likes of Andre Wisdom, Raheem Sterling & Suso who have all secured first-team slots in recent weeks.

The away side, Swansea City, will be looking to reach the quarter-finals of this competition for the first time ever! In their 100-year history (It is their centenary year, hence the new badge) they have never got past this stage of the League Cup and this is an opportunity for Swansea to end that record and take a step closer to another Wembley appearance.

Swansea City entered the competition one round earlier than Liverpool & have therefore played two games to reach this stage. They have faced one side from the nPower Championship (Barnsley) and one from nPower League One. (Crawley Town)

They have scored 6 goals in those two games but have had to work hard for those victories. Their first game, a home tie with Barnsley, was a relatively easy game with Swansea winning 3-1 and they weren’t troubled too much in that game.

Their second game of this competition, an away tie against Crawley Town, was a potential upset and Crawley nearly produced that upset. Swansea took the lead but Crawley battled back and goals from Josh Simpson & Hope Akpan meant that Crawley went 2-1 up.

Swansea battled back though and goals from Danny Graham and club captain Garry Monk meant that Swansea snuck through and booked the tie with Liverpool.

As with Liverpool, Swansea & Michael Laudrup will be expected to make changes. A mini injury crisis has hit Swansea City with Michel Vorm out for a number of weeks with a groin injury and Ashley Williams a doubt with an ankle injury.

This is a big blow for Swansea with Vorm & Williams two of their best players and losing them for any period of time would be a significant blow. Add to this the loss of Angel Rangel who is ruled out due to suspension and three big players for Swansea are out of Wednesday’s game.

As with Liverpool, Laudrup seems likely to bring in some younger players and some of the more experienced players who are on the fringes of the first-team.

In goal, Gerhard Tremmel will replace Vorm and Tremmel will be looking to put in a good performance in what will be his third appearance of the season. Dutch left-back Dwight Tiendalli is set for his first start by replacing youngster Ben Davies in that left-back position.

Other players who seem likely to get some match action are veteran defender Alan Tate, midfielders Jazz Richards & Mark Gower and striker Danny Graham.

Liverpool will know all about Graham after he got the winning goal in the fixture between Swansea City & Liverpool on the last day of last season. This was Kenny Dalglish’s last game as Liverpool manager before being removed from his position and was Brendan Rodgers last game in charge of Swansea City before he moved to...

    Liverpool.

So, an intriguing game in prospect! Can Brendan Rodgers beat his former side and progress to the quarter-finals of the Capital One Cup? Can Swansea beat Rodgers on his own patch and progress to the quarter-finals for the first time in their history?

You’ll find out all of this, and more, on the official match thread on the Not606 Liverpool board!

BR is right to leave Johnson and Pepe out of the first team IMO. No point risking them and it'll give Enrique more game time (which he needs). Wisdom could probably do with a rest though so maybe take a chance on Flanny or Carra at right back (gulp).

No doubt there'll be a few changes for this one after a bruising derby and tough games coming up in the league. Would like to see Yesil personally and I'm pretty sure Assaidi will start after a decent game against Anzi <ok>

Yeah, why risk them we have cover, Enrique needs some game time and Jones has done a good job in place of Reina so far.

I think this could be a good game for Joe Cole to get involved in.

Maybe on the wing, or maybe in Allen's slot.

Was trying to work out who he'll start in midfield. Cole could get the nod yeah. I think we could live with that for this game.

Well done, Chris; an excellent match thread. If the game is as good, we are in for a treat.

Unfortunately, having played Manchester City last Saturday, with Chelsea to follow next weekend, I can't see Michael Laudrup risking too many of our first team choices and I'm guessing we will field a weakened side. For us, as much as we'd love a good cup run, the Premier League has to take precedence. We worked hard to get to there and the financial rewards for staying up are just too high to jeopardize them by risking tiredness or injury to our thin squad.

A good example of this was the Spurs v Southampton game last Sunday. Spurs were a class apart in the first half but Southampton nearly pressured a result in the second half as the Spurs' players got leggy because of their midweek European game. Our first team can compete with any other in this division but we need our all better players to do it and they need to be fresh.

As I see it, if both teams fielded their strongest line ups, the result would be difficult to forecast. BUT.... I believe that Liverpool have far greater strength in depth than we do with an array of exciting young talent that we just don't possess. I am not a defeatist but the reality of the situation is, at this point in time, that your second string players are far better/stronger than ours.

Consequently, and unfortunately for us, I can only see a Liverpool win here. Of course, anything can happen in football and, with the run of the ball, we might nick something but I don't see it. I will just have to be patient and wait for the "real" game when we play you in the league with a full strength side.

I was very impressed with the liverpool youngsters the last time i saw them and it will all depend on what side laudrup will field. He says he wants to do well in the cup but if he don't field our strongest side then its liverpool all the way but if we field a team similar as the one against Man city without vorm and rangel then it will be liverpool who will struggle if you play your youngsters......Should be an interesting wait to see what players take the field on both sides...

Would be nice to have another option to be honest. Even if it's just for cup games it'll give others a rest if nothing else and he might just suit the system too. Good shout that Mrs Walctt <ok>

Our Defence is decimated! So it would take some genius on Laudrups part to get a result tomorrow night, though I expect Michu, Nathan Dyer, Danny Graham, Wayne Routledge, and Leon Britton, all to have some part tomorrow. I think that Jazz Richards will be called upon to take Rangel's position at right back, I see also Dwight Tiendalli slotting in at LB for his first game for us, along with (Unfortunately) Tate to possibly replace Williams, should he be unavailable. I don't agree with Ivor, regarding team selection, it's my view we will field a strong side for this fixture, and it will not impact on our league position one bit, besides we need the momentum that a win here will bring, and after Saturday against Citeh, I'm very positive of a result, even though we will have a weaker defence.

It's good to read of Ian Rush endorsing Laudrup, when he said referring to his good friend Laudrup: "He'll keep them up without doubt," said Rush "I'm looking forward to seeing him. He's a lovely man and a great manager." Have to say that Rushy is one of my all time favourite players, and this looks set to be quite an encounter for so many reasons, here's to a great game, and may the best team win, Come on you Swans! get in there.............<cheers>

"Both teams will want to play football and that's the good thing about it," - Ian Rush

    Swans. Will you boo Allen?

Lets go for Henderson, Shelvey and Cole in midfield.

If Cole can hit form it could be very useful. Much more useful than a guy who doesnt even play.

I know what you mean but I think he was at Swansea since he was 9 years old, I think he is more likely to bet a round of applause if he plays.

boo Joe Allen...Why? there is no reason just like Brendan. They Both got a chance of playing for a bigger club, so you cant really boo anyone who improves themselves in their career....

I can't see that happening at all! The jack Army have no issue with Allen, though there could be a few Boo's for Rodger the Dodger though! By the way lads, Dai is a closet Liverpool fan, just in case you hadn't noticed, he worships Brenda!..........<cheers>

Will we field a strong side? You bet we will, for all the obvious reasons! I'm sure Laudrup will deliver pretty much a first team squad, with a few exceptions. This will not be the usual cup match tradition, of fielding our second team.........<ok>

The main bad thing about the COC cup besides the unfortunate abbreviation is that there'll be no streams for this, only games on sky sports will be shown. For whatever reason league cup games aren't ever available via a stream. Remember doing my nut in trying to find one for Everton v Chelsea so this might be a short match thread <ok>

In tonight's Capital One Cup games, Arsenal haven't got off to the best starts.

27 minutes into the game and they are 3-0 down to Reading. Absolute nightmare from the Arsenal.

All the other games are still 0-0.
