http://www.hullcityafc.net/news/article/reserves-preview-chesterfield-a-455647.aspx This afternoonâs game will be played at Chesterfieldâs Proact Stadium. Tigers (from): Eldin Jakupovic, Sam Topliss, Paul McElroy, Douglas Wilson, Liam Cooper, Conor Townsend, Danny Emerton, Kealan Dillon, Johnny Margetts, Francis McCaffrey, Jamie Devitt, Henry Gill, Matthew Dixon, Lewis Clarkson. Nice to see Kealan Dillon back in the fray
I really dont underestand why Prosser doesnt play or indeed Mclean. If I wasnt getting game time I would demand a run out for the stiffs.
Because they would learn nothing playing at that standard, but it would help their sharpness I suppose.
I am firmly in favour of keeping that 'development squad' together for a season. It's the best way to bring youngsters through. Just seen Phil (Pete) Buckingham tweet the team. That is a good set of lads. They may well get beat but they play some good football and there are some potenial first teamers in there: @PJBuckingham #hcafc reserves to face C'field: Jakupovic, Topliss, McElroy, Wilson, Cooper, Townsend, Emerton, Dillon, Margetts, McCaffrey, Devitt @PJBuckingham Chris Waddle here to watch his lad play for Chesterfield. What a player. Chris, I mean, not Jack.
Im not talking about learning, but precisely the latter. One of the most common cliches in football is reference to 'match fitness' and although not the real thing a run-out with the plebs has to be better than just training for 2 hours a day 5 days a week. I remember going with 5000 others to Fer Ark to watch Man Utd ressies with Bryan Robson playing against City stiffs featuring Garry Parker (Im pretty sure). It used to be a tool to stay fit rather than a 'punishment'.
Jonny Margetts isn't having a bad season, was he one of the lads to sign pro terms at the end of last season? (I know Lewis Clarkson was one). Could we expect to see a couple of new names in our cup squad if we get a low level side?
Game finished Chesterfield 2-4 City. I believe Dougie Wilson, Lewis Clarkson and Johnny Margetts all got pro contracts ahead of this season.
I don't like the idea of separating them from the first team. It's not good for their development or confidence to be treated as kids basically up until they're 21-22, I'm not saying they shouldn't play in the reserves but I don't see why they can't have the odd first teamer in there too to learn from. I remember Conor Townsend telling me years ago when Phil Parkinson was here (I think it was him anyway) that he wouldn't let the young pros even train with the first team and they basically had their own 6-7 man group training completely separate to the first team and only playing reserves. Needless to say they weren't impressed by it.
Generally, first teamers only play for the ressies when coming back from an injury as they are deemed match fit if they are being selected in the matchday squad week in week out
That is in complete contrast to every quote I have ever heard from a player who hasnt been getting time on the pitch.
Ye remember that BCC. Steve Brentano was given the job of marking Robbo, didnt get near him. coasted through it and was taken off with half an hour left, so he was ready for Saturday.
Cullen has a shin injury, we recalled him because wanted him to be treated by our physios. He'll probably go back out on loan once he's fit again.
We didn't need to recall him to treat him, it's common for a loan player to go back to his parent club while injured, I still don't understand why we terminated his loan.
Maybe they terminated his loan because he wasn't making the first team, but we agreed to publicise it as us recalling him so that it didn't basically end his career. Being sent back by Bury even though they'd have to continue paying his wages til the transfer window opened wouldn't exactly help us "sell" him to other clubs when we try offloading him in January.
