I normally go the games but today I couldn't so I listened to it on 5 live extra, and I must admit that it sounded a dire first half, but what really concerned me is how quiet the crowd were. Even the commentators said how devoid of atmosphere the first half was. That's the shame as we need to get behind the team! Did anybody else experience a less than passionate crowd?

Certainly one of the quietest atmospheres I can remember, I said that at the time and all. In fairness, there was nothing on the pitch that gave the fans anything to get remotely excited for. As soon as we started creating some half chances in the second half then the crowd started to come alive.

It's going to be pretty subdued with our current form. Not a surprise at all.

I think the crowd was experiencing a less than passionate team. Blame the team not the crowd. They were ****ing terrible in the first half. You can be 2-0 down and look like you're up for it. We were 2-0 down and weren't getting stuck in AT ALL

Joe, do we only be loud and passionate because we are doing well, or should we get behind them and encourage them. I'm for the latter myself. Surely they must have felt the negative atmosphere!

If you were there today, you'd understand why no-one felt much like singing

Of course we should, but it's no surprise that people don't feel like it when confidence is low and the team isn't playing well. You've seen all the whining morons we're getting on here recently. You think they're getting behind the team and cheering them right now? I doubt it. Unfortunately the mood on here is probably a fair reflection of the mood at St. Mary's.

The first half was so lacking in atmosphere simply because it was so, so, so one sided. We did nothing. They completely controlled possession and the game in general. Of course it's not going to be rocking.

The second half was a different affair - us fans weren't at our best, but we still put in a chunky shift in terms of atmosphere generation.

I took my son to todays game (his third game at SMS this season) and he commented about how strange it was that standing in the corner of the Northam/Kingsland that everyone is standing up "giving it a good un" but looking round the rest of the ground it was absolutely dead.
When I looked he was right, no singing or any signs of life just polite applause. Shame really but nothing new

To be fair it's the worst I've seen us play for ages, and the two goals spaced out killed any attempts at a sing song. Going to be controversial and say that as loud stands go the northam isn't actually very good.

The first half was so dire the crowd were stunned. The Northam tried to keep going and were brilliant in second half and, especially, at the end of the match. It is not surprising that singers/chanters congregate together...they enjoy it and make more noise feeding off each other and the opposition. Enjoyed the way thay kept singing 'When Saints go marching in' when Spurs fans tried to sing their version...just made it sound louder. And at one point they baited Spurs fans with 'At least we sing our own song.'

Well, I always listen to Radio Solent during the match and their effects mike was picking up plenty of noise from the crowd, I think it may be down to the acoustics rather than a lack of effort from the fans, having said that, during the second half I was finding it more difficult to hear the radio, so it was definitely louder in the ground. In the Kingsland/Chapel End, you can hear the Northam when in full voice, but you pick very little sound up from the Itchen/Chapel side. It would be interesting to know whether the players are affected by the noise or do they shut it out and concentrate on the game.

I was at the game and some parts of the crowd were really crappy. Booing our team off at half time, booing Boruc, booing Puncheon, booing Guly. I'm sure it's not helping!

There was plenty of singing from the Northam stand though.

    Enjoyed the following exchange;

Spurs; "you are Southampton, you don't sing at all."
Saints; "we are Southampton, we sing our own song."

But generally, worst atmosphere I can recall at St Mary's. Worse even than when poor old Stuart Grey was in charge and the ground was half empty.

We need to be setting off more flares. Flares are good.

I can't recall ever hearing St. Mary's being so quiet. There was absolutely no atmospehere - even for a ground that decidedly lacks the kind of ambience of The Dell where you could often leave the match with your ears ringing from standing in the Archers. I totally agree about the lack of inspiration from the field. I can't ever recall seeing such an uninspired and uninterested performance as the first half yesterday. It was worse than shocking and seemed to signify an acceptance that not only would we be relegated but we would go down in a fashion that would be the most pathetic in Premiership history. The whole experience in the first half was of total humiliation and produced a display that teams about 2-3 divisions below us would have fancied their chances too.

It was strange to see the transformation in the scond half where I felt we put in some of the best football we have played in the PL and showed that we are capable of competing at this level. If we play like that for the remainder of the season, I would thing we will not be threatened by relegation yet the spectre of the first half is something that you don't forget in a hurry. The pessimism seemed to permeate everyone in the ground.

BTW I thought Muyuka looked briliant. He should easily be in the starting eleven and after that performance.
