The funny thing was it was on Uni premises and the guy went on to be the Uni president so it all came good for him in the end.

Time to back off big time on the racism issue. It's just wrong for White people to lecture Black people on how to deal with racism. It's not rocket science, FFS.

As for that twat Claudio Caniggia he was so famously off his head on the marching powder he isn't worth bothering about.

I never went back to Italy for all the years I was in a relationship with a Black British girl for that very reason. Simply couldn't take the comments.

Simply not worth the effort, Italy's beyond saving as regards racism and it's getting worse every year.

Unless they're come from and open, overt agenda, the 'isms' are open to interpretation and often difficult to judge at the best of times.

As I said earlier, I certainly don't see it as a mod's job to make such judgement but simply to respond to complaints received. Whilst clearly offended by generalisations relating to players of African origin, Queenslander has not complained privately and has instead simply tried to show why such race-based generalisations need to be carefully managed to avoid misinterpretation. Well done him given the need to stand alone in challenging what has been a particularly academic dialectic on the more subtle side of the race debate.

We allowed the thread to run because we learn more by talking things over - and despite some rather odd reactions towards the end in terms of people 'leaving', the tone was generally pretty moderate and respectful throughout.

If I have anything material to contribute to the debate it is to ask, 'what IS racism'? Whilst the text books argue about this from every possible angle, it can usefully be boiled down to the following Free Dictionary definition (admittedly slightly amended by me).

    1. The belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability.
    2. The belief that a particular race is superior (or inferior) to others.
    3. Discrimination or prejudice based on race.

Number 1 (reflecting our natural inclination to place knowledge and personal observations into stereotypical boxes) says what decades as an active anti-racist have taught me. We are ALL racist by virtue of our upbringing.

It doesn't hurt anyone to admit that to ourselves or anyone else. Whites, Blacks, Hispanics, Arabs and Asians of both varieties ALL observe qualities and otherwise in 'their own' and others. It doesn't hurt to say that each has GENERALLY contributed more than others in different areas to make the world what it is.

If someone accused me of being racist in making a race-based general observation, I'd probably just swallow it and think what do you expect, I'm only human.

However, numbers 2 and 3 above are where that racism turns into a willful act and therefore highly and deliberately offensive to those in the target group.

The fact is, I see loads of us on here that demonstrate the notion that race accounts for differences in human character or ability (sprinting, boxing, boating, ping-pong, music, maths, science, the arts, cooking etc. etc... and not forgetting dancing!). No problems with that benign type of racism.

What I haven't seen too much of (if any at all) is posters pushing a discriminatory agenda that says that a particular race is superior (or inferior) to others.

Prejudice (pre-judgement based on too little information) is another matter entirely. When not deliberate, it reflects our standard human foibles in talking before thinking.

Nazis know what they're intent upon achieving. Numpties like the rest of us, are just shooting the breeze. No harm done.

    Sermon done. Seconds out!

Apart from the obvious that there is only one race and that's the human race there are a few issues that won't go away.

Some take a religion and pretend they are a separate "race" with plenty of pseudo science and their holy books declare that all others are without souls and just animals.

    That's really ****ed up.

I know the scripts you're talking about Imy (which would surprise one or two on here I'm sure!). Some, if not all religions are intrinsically racist, sexist, homophobic etc., not to mention contradictory / hypocritical, and for that reason - and the fact that people get hooked on faith as opposed to fact - I'm afraid I just cannot do religion.

To be fair other faiths specifically state in their books there is only one race, the human race and if we look a little different that's something to marvel at, not despise.

Would write more but the internet connection isn't all that up here in my cave.

We have some really mentally challenged folks around here don't we?
I for one was abused in my own home town because I have long hair. Even got threats that they will kill me. Go figure, just because of my hair. There's just something wrong with people which I never understood and never will.

Sadly regardless of our journey to this point I very much doubt if (as much as it iswanted) worldwide education/awarness and understanding will never reach the mark where a parity on the issues raised is concluded. Differences of opinion and the acts of man are simply that and will always be that and that is what makes the whole thing tick... we lucky insulated few can feel happier and more content knowing and feeling it's all just very very wrong yet we live under a system that invented the book of ****ters and still practice the same dark arts... fighting to keep the third world exactly that by every and all measures. Religion and Racism are the tools of balance in a unbalanced world if it was all balanced how could you measure it? It is all controlled and designed to be that way ... all things equal? not on this planet

Borrowed from the Artist Taxi Driver:

Children in Need soon ... keep a close eye out for where the money is headed and match that to what mining is taking place there and we give and we give and we rape and we rape. it's not about skin colour or what your faith is nor has been ... Power and Money
