HIV may survive in dried blood at room temperature for up to five or six days provided that the optimum pH level is maintained; drying of blood does not seem to affect the infectivity of HIV.

    Well there you go. <ok>

Viruses can't replicate outside their host - people generally mistake that to mean they can't survive. So it's feasible that if someone had HIV-infected blood on a razor blade, some virus particles would remain infectious for several weeks - even in a jiffy bag.

Edit: a week, not weeks <doh>

So, like I said it does not survive for weeks? I hope the people sent it by DHL or something because if it was by Royal Mail, then the virus would have no chance to survive.

For all their faults even the Royal Mail are generally able to to deliver a jiffy bag in 5 or 6 days

Especially to Rangers-hating bigot QCs <grr>

No, I know, they probably get a bad time of it to be honest, but I wasn't aware that it could survive for 5 or 6 days especially in normal conditions, which I still don't believe, as would the pH level not change?

Blood acidifies after death and low pH is not ideal for HIV survival. So it's true - if I 100% definitely, absolutely wanted to infect someone with HIV, I'd probably think of another way than sending a blood-encrusted razor blade in a jiffy bag <laugh>

But there's still a theoretical possibility that it might "work" <whistle>

I suspect that the person sending the package would include a note saying that the blade was encrusted with AIDS more to put fear into the recipient rather than actually infecting them with blood.

Having once worked in a Jobcentre it's amazing what people will send in the post. It wasn't that unusual to receive forms smeared in ****e.

But then I did work at the Jobcentre where MD signed on.

Seems like someone knows how to send an aids blade in the post a little too well.

Yip and you've researched the time it takes aids to remain dangerous on a razor.

In other words, pretty much impossible! Why not just inject the **** with a needle and be done with it? Would also save on postage and packaging. Only thing about it, you couldn't use the needle again, because you could catch something...wait a minute!

Ahh, but harder to trace a package than some nutter wandering around with an AIDS stick.

Maybe if you send a few hundred razor blades over the course of several weeks? Obviously there's the small chance that after the first ten or fifteen times he cut himself opening letters he might become a bit wary. Still, worth a try I'd have thought <ok>

Disclaimer: for internet police, AP does not endorse sending HIV-infected razor blades through the post. All posts are based purely on a hypothetical situation, we at not606 are united in our condemnation of AIDS-razor blade senders. And jobby-razor blade senders for that matter.

to be fair I don't think the QC did either. He said he was briefed by the police on the possibility of it happening. That's what I thought anyway. Silly Peelers
