The Holloway link has been picked up on by most of the national papers this morning. TBH we are not in the position to appoint someone like Holloway at the moment. If we were in mid table security I would get him down here asap but we are in real danger of falling out of this league and we need someone a bit more serious imo.
A safe pair of hands is needed at the moment and with Holland he could well be the future manager once we have moved into calmer waters. Holland played for Mick McCarthy in the 2002 World cup and they get on really well together. This could well be the perfect match for us and the fans will have a link restored to the club through Holland. Would make the perfect sense!
I may or may not of been serious, supers. Don't see Holloway getting the job as I can only see Curbs or McCarthy getting it, with McCarthy being my favourite. I certainly hope so anyway.
agree. this was the point i was making before. how bad was it on saturday? it certainly came across bad! proper poisonous atmosphere by all accounts.
I must admit that I only heard the commentory on Suffolk and it was appalling! I have never heard Mick Mills so bloody angry and that is unusual for him! It only confirmed what some of us have known for a long, long time. The club is rotten to the core, a large number of players are only here for the pay cheque and it takes a loanee to actually admit that some of the players need a big kick up on the arse. Worrying times indeed and I really believe that we are heading for a stint in league 1 no matter who comes in! The problems are too ingrained and too deep and it will take a good couple of seasons for someone to sort out this mess.
Serious question JWM, IF you were to be relegated, what do you reckon of your chances of 'doing a Norwich' ? I'm not taking the piss, but IF the worst happens I can honestly see it being a very long way back for you
We need a big clear out by someone who knows what they are doing! Don't get me wrong the prospect of Lg 1 football is not something that I would relish but looking at the bigger picture it might be a blessing in disguise if it gives us a chance to start again and rebuild a formidable team. I think that under someone like Matty Holland in League 1 we would attract young hungry players who actually have something to prove and would be longing for the chance of playing at a higher level with us. I know you will dismiss this but we are a relatively "big" club in terms of fanbase, infrastructure and financial resources and we will be a very attractive prospect for many talented players. I would say that we would go up at the first time of asking so long as we had the right set up in place.
warky, in terms of league one you're a truly massive club - with the right manager in tow you'd be able to buy all the best players from that league, but you'd need the right man - not sure holland would be right at all. he's a very wooden character, hardly inspiring. very good player especially for you guys but can't see him being managerial material. number two maybe, as the nice guy in a double act. in championship terms, you're just another club at the moment and i really mean no offence by saying that, its just that its true. ten years ago you were a real force in that league and most players would head to portman road before most others, but you can't compete with the relegated clubs, you're attendances although ok are still middle of the road in comparison to others in that league. you're not paying wages that will compete with the teams near the top. you've got your history and well, that's it at this time. i think its because you've been like a broken record in that league - how many years is it? 12, 13? stagnation is never attractive to anyone. this is why going down might benefit your club in the long run. stress i said might! there are never any guarantees, but one step backwards to go two steps forward must look quite appealing to you. visiting other grounds, rather than the same ones year in year out, getting a freshness to a new season that you've not had in some time, winning football matches... as i say, its not the ideal way to do it but at the end of the day, you fans don't get a choice! it all depends if your players can do the business on the pitch.
I agree with that Supers although it is somewhat painful to admit it! I fear that the current problems that we face have gone far too deep and there seems an air of inevitability that we are going down. The new manager will have one hell of a job on his hands to keep us up this year with the cards he will be dealt. Matt Holland comes across as wooden on the tele but I have met him a few times and he is a very passionate and knowledgable guy in real life. We would have nothing to lose by appointing him our manager in Lg1 with George Burley as the senior older head. Whatever happens from now til the rest of the season I think us Townies really need a big reality check and begin to recognise that we have no divine right to be in this league. I face the nightmare prospect of my local team Crawley Town being in a higher league than us next season and they have a ****ty little ground with a pitiful fanbase! My how the football spectrum has altered since those halcyon days of a decade ago. We were playing Inter Milan in the UEFA Cup and now we coulod be on the verge of our first season in the third tier in 56 years! I would look forward to travelling away to the Brentfords, Chesterfields and Yeovils of this world but not for more than 1 season!
The other "attraction" to relegation is it will give you a chance to add the Johnstones Paint Ball Trophy to your overflowing trophy cabinet!
We were knocked out by a much richer Saints team, that only missed out on promotion due to a points deduction, otherwise it would have been us and them, not Leeds!
do you know what, i'd forgotten about the JPT! quite a good little competition that. we were seconds away from a trip to wembley if i remember rightly, knocked out on penalties by eventual winners saints in the area final, but it was a nice break from the demands of the league. not sure anyone was that bothered we didn't win it though and was a good chance to play the kids. not sure you can do that now - the rules have been changed so you have to play a certain percentage of first team players! stupid rule - whose to say which players are better than others? stupid, stupid, stupid rule, just like the similar premier league rule.
