I voted for Bassong without reading any of the posts on this thread first, glad to see most of you agree
got to laugh at certain people on here who obviously can't wait to have a dig at me anyway, i agree with the majority, bassong has been our best player so far this season. he's led by example in each match he's played and kept his partners in check. i'd also like to point out that everything i said about bassong before we signed him has been proven true, ie, he does drift off occasionally and lose concentration. it seems to happen once a game, which is exactly what i said he did.
I wasn't having a dig with my comment, I was genuinely concerned because I have learned over the years that what you say is generally pretty accurate, and I wasn't sure how much his lapses were going to cost us, and the answer is, so far, not very much, but on the plus side, he's given us a new and improved Leon Barnett and Tina Turner!
i was only joking with my 'bitterness' david! i think people can see that he makes a few slip ups. so far they haven't been too costly. if he didn't make these slip ups he'd be playing for man utd. he's got everything in his locker to be a top centre half. pace, power, strength... he just slips up reading the game sometimes. he's a good defender - you don't get player of the year at newcastle if you're not - but he does have his shortfalls. thankfully, they have been kept to a minimum so far - lets hope that continues.
I think that Bassong was perhaps as equally at fault for Villa's goal as Turner. Just it's easier for the fans to jump on Turners back. R Martin has made at least one bad mistake leading to a goal this season and I heard very few people moaning at him as much as they have to Turner. Also, in a way surprised about the majority of people voting for Bassong but I shouldn't be really as he's been brilliant in helping the team. I was going to do another thread for a poll on Hughton's best signing but it's rather clear that there's no point now.
It's Holt for me.That might seem an odd choice but my reasoning is thus: The season hinged around the second half against Liverpool, more especially from 60 minutes onwards when Holt scored his first goal of the season. The stats are these : Before that point F-1 A-11. After F-5 A-6.
Yes, and an awesome ball loser, too. I find him totally frustrating. If he could distribute the ball as effectively as he wins it, he would be really special. Why is he so wasteful when he has worked so hard to get possession? Is it a rush of blood to the head, do you think? If only we could put the best of Fox and the best of Johnson together. But then that guy would be playing for Man City by now, I suppose.
tettey > johnson any sane man can see that, surely? johnson has had a decent start to the season to be fair, though he was awful at the weekend. i'd still rather fox play ahead of him in that role, though there is a time and a place for johnson. against arsenal he was inspired, but come on - tettey is much the better player.
you're right wonky. bassong was caught ball watching, turner was dragged out of position. they were both to blame, although it was more turner's fault than bassong.
Bugger, just realised I didn't put Tettey on the list, it may have been because he hasn't played a lot but he can always go under other.
