The same reason they give players injections to get them through games knowing that they run the risk of making the injury worse?

In ways both are better finishers, Simpson is far more likely to hit an awkward shot first time where fryatt would try control it and get a better opportunity, and Simpson likes to blast it where fryatt likes to place it. Away from goal is where the big difference is though, I think fryatt is far more comfortable on the ball and has better control and off the ball gets himself into better positions and reads the game alot better, but Simpson is stronger, faster and better in the air.

Like I've said before, they are both the same yet completely different.

The issue with that is that even though he likes to place it, he never succeds. Simpson against Milwall was a proper placed finish and Fryatt doesn't do that, he just places it right at the 'keeper. I can't think of a goal he's scored that fits the 'nicely placed out of the keepers reach' category like that one against Milwall. If anyone can remind me of one Ill accept it, but I really don't think they'll be able to.

I agree with what Fez said above that we have an issue with finishing all round, Aluko for example is a fantastic talent and can shoot brilliantly from distance but one-on-one he's the same as the others, his goal yesterday was right next to the keepers body and on another day might have been another wasted chance.

There is no way Aluko could have scored without it being near his body, keepers close down. Alukos finish was sweet into the corner as far from the keeper as possible with enough power to see it by. If he could curl it and send it in off the post every time like you want he'd be playing up front for Barcelona. Off the top of my head while I'm half asleep all from last season fryatt scored great finishes at home to Barnsley, away at Ipswich, a fantastic one where he rounded the keeper against leicester, away at derby, season before away at forest, at home to Leeds.. Most of fryatts goals have been well taken. It's irrelevant though because I think Simpson and fryatt are very close in their finishing ability, I just think the rest of fryatts game is a lot better, he sees a lot more and reads the game better and is better with the ball at his feet.

I'll admit I don't remember the Forest one in detail (18 months ago) but apart from that Bob you're just listing his goals, half of them are exactly the type of lucky finish I go on about. None of them were particularly well placed like the Simpson one I mentioned.

You mentioned one where he rounded the keeper, how that counts as placing it in the corner I do not know.

Rounding the keeper is better than placing it in the corner anyway. But it doesn't matter if it comes off his arse or his head, in the middle, top corner, off the post, through the keepers legs or anything, as long as it goes in the net. A goal is a goal, you don't get an extra goal awarded for placing it in the corner.

To be fair Fryatt was one game away from going two months without scoring, and started doing brilliantly when we was already guaranteed of not been in the play offs. He is a good player at this level, but if he was as good as you lot sometimes make out he would be in the Premier League, he has good games, but when we needed him in games like Doncaster at home and many others around that time, he was missing.

Obviously. But the argument that's often made is that he's some kind of finishing genius just because he scored goals last season, when actually as we've just concluded, half of them were more down to poor goalkeeping than good finishing. RE Aluko's goal yesterday I can see what you mean that the keeper came out quickly but I think if it was the other way round and we'd conceded there, we'd be blaming the 'keeper and it's no coincidence that we don't finish enough chances when slipping it just next to the keeper is considered a good finish.

Fryatt is no finishing genius but he is definitely a good comfortable finisher. I think fryatt has a knack of finding space though which gets him more chances to miss, like they say you've got to be there to miss is in the first place, sometimes Simpson only gets himself in a shooting position once or twice a game, I think fryatt would double getting into positions on average.

However if we're going to berate anyone's finishing it should be Aluko, he's had the 3rd most amount of shots in the league with a return of just 4 goals, and has missed some complete and utter sitters you'd even put your money on McLean to score.

Frankly I'd never dare put money on McLean to score from any given opportunity <laugh>

Matty Fryatt has scored 25 goals for us in 68 league games.

We don't have another striker who will come close to that.

However annoyed anyone gets with the amount of touches he takes, he's better on the ball than any of our other strikers, he gets in better positions and he scores more goals, losing him may well be the reason we don't make the top six this season(unless we replace him, obviously).

Personally I think Simpson will score more then Fryatt, I think Dudgeon is a bigger miss.

I have absolutely no doubt that Simpson will score more than Fryatt does this season
