Mackem is nothing to do with football, it's down to the ship building in the area. It's all down to personal interpretation. You say I'm talking bollicks, I'm 30 year old and grew up in the town, I'm proud of where I am from, I am a sand dancer. There are also alot of people from Newcastle who take offence if people south of Gateshead use the term Geordie to describe themselves. I've been called a plastic geordie many times because of where I am from, I don't claim to be a Geordie. I'm from south shields. Everyone has their own opinion.

Unfortunately I'm called a geordie by any other ****er who isn't from the North East. I don't give a toss all the same it's just a label.
That's just a regional thing mate. Anyone outside of the northeast hears the accents and the mackem accent sounds the same as a geordie one. There is only us lot who live up hear an tell the difference.
I don't actually as stated previously, I had the choice, my family is split between Geordies and Mackems. I chose to identify myself as a Mackem. Nowt against Geordies, but no I do not wish to be a Geordie had I wished to be a Geordie I would have identified myself as a Geordie.
The term 'Geordie' is widely thought to have its origins from the Durham pits, more associated with Sunderland than Newcastle, and later for the North East accent in general. It is only from the late 1970's onwards that the term 'Mackem' came into popular use. In recent years 'Geordie' has been more associated with someone from Tyneside, which includes all the towns both north and south of that river, but there is the odd thick Skunk who thinks that it should only concern Skunk supporters from that given area.
Which is what I am saying. If you went to any Sunderland fan in jarrow, hebburn, shields or wherever and put it to them that they were a Geordie, then I'm pretty sure you would be shot down in flames for it. Don't get me wrong, I'd be happy to have shields populated by Newcastle fans, but the start of this whole discussion was about saying that if your from shields you a a Geordie. Like I say, wi regards to football, it's a healthy mix, when I comes to what you are known as because of where you are born, then it takes it away from football. The older generations from jarrow don't like to be associated with shields, just like a Sunderland supporter from shields won't want to be associated with the Newcastle. It's all about preference and how you were brought up.

Haha, what's ******ed about knowing your roots. Looks like someone has been typing the word Geordie into google or wiki. Genius. If some of you mackems had half a brain, you might actually see that what I have been saying is in a way defending your supporters from the surrounding towns, but you are to bitter and single minded to see this. The terms mackem and Geordie have naff all to do with football as we have established, however, you have provided me with some entertainment over the last couple of hours over something that quite frankly means nothing.
So you have no understanding of what a geordie is then? Being a geordie or mackem has nothing to do with which football team you support but where you are born and bred. My cousin was born at the RVI and lived in Heaton till he was about 12. He now lives near Durham and supports sunderland but proud to be a geordie.
