There have been some extremely bad 'Greasy Spoons' in Hull, in my lifetime. One of note was the Empire Grill, in Fish Street, long gone. It was about the only place where the old tramps and dossers were tolerated. I only went in once or twice, but a mate of mine loved it. Anyone got more - either great or crap/poisonous?
Anyone remember the Klondyke? It was on Hedon Road and, as far as I recall, opposite Marfleet Lane end/lights. It was a dockers' cafe and seemed to be a kind of 'lean-to', built around a telephone pole. The floor was cardboard cartons (flattened out) laid over the earth. Mugs of scalding strong tea, hot cakes, banjos. Fantastic!......and now, of course, gone.
The Bacon Banjo, forget where it is but it was quality. The biggest fry up I've ever seen. And that my friends, is saying something!
I was working on a house renovation in South Cave over 30 years ago and the chippy there used to open as a greasy spoon in the mornings and the breakfasts were fantastic. Unfortunately, it's a Chinese fish and chip shop now, so it now just serves **** fish and chips, or **** Chinese. I assume it will be doing **** pizza or **** kebabs before long, though there's probably a no-kebab bylaw in Cave.
There was/is a Bacon Banjo on the town end of Holderness Rerrd/Witham not far from the old Green man (?) bowling place. But even better than that was the cafe near Reckitts Blue down the side of Brooke's Tiles. The "Belly Buster" was a thing of beauty. A Stottie filled with Sausages, Eggs, Bacon, Beans, Black Pudding, Fried Onion and some bad stuff too!! I ****ing loved working Saturday mornings for that!
Great one used to be on the corner of Morley St down Stoneferry. Think it went when they widened the road.
If anyone ever drives from Gatwick to Brighton there's a brilliant greasy spoon just outside a place called Cowfold called "The Chalet", great big fry ups on a Sunday morning on the way to watching the greyhounds at Brighton&Hove.
There used to be an ace 'spoon' on Brighton front, in 'The Arches'. called 'Ma's'. (before your time, Horsham.....the 60's?) Super claggy bread pudding!
I never went in, but Joyce's Cozy Cafe on Bev Road across the road from er.. the Swan or Bull (I forget which) looked pretty crappy. Was there for years. Still could be for all I know.
Stantons on Fish dock in its heyday was a great place to get a mugga from when working down dock, and their home made hotcakes smothered in butter were brill..
Hlderness Cafe just near the baths was class back in the day. Homemade bread cakes and an excellent full english. Poppins down Bankside used to be good too.
