Adam Barrett (Gillingham) Barrett has been a revelation for the Kent club this season, with consistently strong performances and was very impressive in the Gills' rout of Burton Albion, including a spectacular goal-line clearance. Manager Martin Allen said: âThat was a great clearance, an important clearance, but it doesnât surprise me about him. Itâs not a shock, heâs such a warrior, heâs such a leader, heâs been a great captain, it doesnât surprise me but it was brilliant.â Joe Martin (Gillingham) Martin netted a fantastic long range volley and put in a strong performance in defence, keeping out a decent Burton side. Myles Weston (Gillingham) Weston scored a brilliant individual goal and terrorised the Burton defence all afternoon with his strength and pace. UTG Also in the Sun today Matt Fish and Lewis Montrose made their team of the weekend.
Maybe it is me being a miserable git but I think fans may be blinded by Barretts superb form in previous games and his incredible clearance on Saturday. In reality he looked second best to Zola nearly every time on Saturday and for the first time I thought it was clear why he was not playing at a higher level. Once Zola went off of course, it was business as usual with Barrett in command.
bristol407 - compared with me you're not being a miserable git ! I understand what you're saying - Barrett certainly was tested by Zola - but if you remember nearly all of the headers that Zola won amounted to nothing - not finding a partner to capitalise from the fact that he won a lot of headers. I think that says a lot about the way we are set up at the back this season. We are much more solid as a unit and that is why we have conceded so few. There will be other occasions this season when individual battles will not be won - but if, as a unit, we can cancel out any threat that they might otherwise pose, we should be o k.
Within all the comments I have made about the game at no time do I believe as a fan that I was blinded by Barrett's previous performances. I felt all along that Zola and Maghoma should have turned the game for Burton but as a team they failed to utilise the space for these players. Barrett received untold praise from me for his goal line clearance and no such praise was written for other contribution. The goal clearance was a valuable second that decides when games can be won or lost. Even Gemini's OP has noted comment to that affect from reports. It always frustrates me during highlights, that the main focus in on goals, but not showing one momentary instance of a match winning tackle, clearance or superb save, that prevent heads from dropping and allowing the opposition back into the game.
I don't disagree with you two at all. My point is that it is a bit ironic that Barrett (and Fish for that matter) get singled out for individual recognition the week that there were some defects in their individual performances after a string of outstanding performances in previous weeks. The secondary point, that as a unit the defence was exemplary, is well made but teams of the week never select an entire back four from one team. Perhaps they should!
Martin Allen made me laugh in todays paper when he said whenever he heres police sirens he thinks he is going to get arrested for daylight robbery for getting Barrett and Weston on free transfers.
