For what its worth I thought it was harsh...He was late in a strong tackle, not the 'whole second' Shearer suggested, we're talking tenths of a second at the very most. Was it a bit stupid, yes, but was it malicious, no! Given the bounce of the ball, had Tiote got in there a fraction of a second earlier, he'd have won it and fletcher would've kicked him in the ankle (I know that's all ifs and buts - the point im making is both players we're going for the ball, not each other).

As for Shearer sayings its a red so it must be. Ask 90% of Toon fans what they think of Shearer as a pundit and they'll be in agreement he is woeful. He seems too desperate to appear unbiased and as such is almost apologetic of his Newcastle links. His analysis is 1 dimensional and obvious and he tells you nothing you didn't already know. Shearer said 'he was late, his foot was high and his studs were raised - it has to be a red' ... Larson was late, his foot was higher and his studs were raised - missed that one Alan didn't you...

Larrson was always watching the ball and the ball was up there. Tiotes challenge the ball was on the ground and he went in at knee height. Larrson should have had a yellow and Tiote red.

No way a red, we're in danger of becoming complete pussies if we are giving out reds for that. Fair play to Fletcher though, his play acting was first class. I'm not sure it had much impact though as ref was itching to get that card out. Silly from Tiote though to kick him and certainly a yellow card. Initially he went for the ball (which was in mid air) and then it was defo one of those where you leave a little in, out of frustration which Colback. I think the ref just didn't cope well with the occasion.

How Larsson got away scot free from his is strange. Defo intential, ball was long gone. Again a yellow card. Have to say though I thought Sunderland were a lot less dirty than they have been in the past yesterday and generally both sides were a bit more sensible.

Ref was a bag of ****e all round for us yesterday but we played well so can't moan too much.

It's not knee high and his eyes are clearly on the ball and whilst the picture quality is poor, Larson is looking at Ameobi (for what its worth, I don't think Larson's was a red, as there was no intent or maliciousness, it was simply mistimed and clumsy)

I wonder what you and the other mags would say if Cattermole had made the same challenge and got a yellow??

(See above re Tiote and Cattermole - if Catts had made that challenge I can guarantee you would all have been complaining he was not sent off simply because he is Cattermole)!

Also - Agree about Larsson's which wasn't malicious but was clumsy and silly - but what about Cabaye?? 9 fouls yesterday and 3 of them were easily yellows (worse than Larssons and much more calculated) but it was his 9th he got booked for?

Fair point...Obviously some players carry a reputation and its been Tiote's own doing that he's got one for being an overzealous tackler (just like Cattermole is known for seeing the red mist)...Similarly though, I think had it been Tiote's studs going into Fletcher's chest he'd have seen red for that too. Seems wrong in a sense that the game is dictated by a player's previous reputation, but he made his bed, he has to lie in it - just like Cattermole!

Would have been a yellow for me regardless of who it was Marcus. Maybe Cattermole would have also got red though because of reputation, I have no problem with saying that. I have said on many occasions that he does get treated harshly because of his reputation. I simply think he has earned that reputation and still throws in bad challenges now and again when he loses it.

Tiote didn't need to kick him, so he has been silly regardless.

Your obsession with Cabaye is silly. If he had committed these offences that no other fan or pundit has seen fit to mention, Mr Atkinson would have been only too happy to have booked him! He did have an outstanding game though (Cabaye not the ****ing ref obviously who was shocking)

I have to say I think there was a bit of malice in Larssons. Ball was long gone and he was looking at Shola not the ball. Can't blame him for wanting to kick Shola though, and still just a yellow. We are all getting a bit too soft for me, its a contact sport. Its worth noting that neither Shola or Fletcher had any trouble continuing after minimal treatment!

Shearer is trying too hard to not appear biased towards the club he loves. It's a shame as he still does so much in his charity efforts to fight for the people of Tyneside.
If Tiote wasn't being wrestled at the time from behind, I'd say his mistimed challenge deserved a yellow.

One thing you are all missing is that the ball was dead. The ref had blown for a free kick. I actually missed the piont of contact as I was alrrady thinking about how we would set up for the free kick.

So in terms of how late it was you have to look both at the foul (which I have now seen on replays) and how long it was after the free kicj had been given to the mags.

Also outstanding given the proximity of the referee. To receive such a little tug on the arm and produce such a convincing fall was impressive. Modern footballers are all tarts. I think Shola was the only one to come out with any credit in the "not being a fairy" stakes as at least his was a fairly hefty blow and he made minimal fuss.
