I thought as much to be fair MD, have you ever tried cold water extraction of codeine? Enough tablets and apparently you can get it up to the same strength as morphine (in tablet form).
As a young man, a mate and I tried a pack of head ache powders in a bottle of coke. It was foul. After a couple of swigs, it got tossed.
Codeine's different though. It metabolises in your stomach into morphine - just like heroin (diamorphine). So if you can take enough, it's pretty potent. You can't get pure codeine over the counter though, it's always mixed with harmful stuff like paracetamol and ibuprofen. Cold water extraction removes the extras.
