To be fair, it is a brilliant game.

It isn't. All the Fifa games have been good in their own right, but there's always several flaws with both the gameplay and online play that will stop it from ever being anything great IMO.

Compared to the likes of Half Life 2, Skyrim, WoW, Diablo, I don't not see how Fifa can be put up there with the games that I could imagine would lead to such infatuation. It's not nearly complex enough, and it's always riddled with critical flaws.

You have to remember this is FIFA. People who play FIFA generally tend to have heard of two games ... FIFA, and Call of Duty. Anything more in-depth is greek to them.

I think you have to view them as different kinds of games. If you compare the features of games like Skyrim and HL2 to fifa, obviously Skyrim and HL2 are going to win every time. The thing that fifa offers is pure fun. You don't need to think too much or remember quest lines and plots, you can just hop on and play with your mates. Fifa offers a social aspect that thick single player campaign games don't seem to.

True, out of all the games I have (currently playing Skyrim, Syndicate, Battlefield3, Halo Reach, PES, Deus Ex, Just Cause 2, Left 4 Dead2...) PES is the only one i consistently come back to. It's always football but it's always different (except why are Liverpool so good in the game??)

I have tried to get into Fifa over the years as the game has more licensed teams so I can play Norwich v Ipswich for example, for me PES is way more playable ..
I don't play online just with mates but I really don't enjoy Fifa13 as much as PES...
I'm not saying its better ,I just find it more realistic to real footy...

    PES has fallen behind.

It used to be the better game but a lack of developement has seen it fall further and further behind.

The latest FIFA is superior in almost every aspect.
