England Under-21s defender reveals the abuse that was aimed at him in Serbia

Danny Rose has revealed that he was subjected to racial abuse from as early as the warm-up ahead of England Under-21s’ Euro 2013 play-off in Serbia on Tuesday. Stuart Pearce’s Young Lions snatched a late victory in Krusevac to seal a 2-0 aggregate win over the Serbians, booking their place at next summer’s Finals in Israel. Connor Wickham’s winner with the last kick of the game sparked horrible scenes that saw Serbian captain Slobodan Medojevic shown a red card and a mass brawl as England’s players and staff tried to retreat to the tunnel.

But Rose admitted that the abuse from the fans was going on much earlier. The Sunderland left-back, currently on loan from Tottenham Hotspur, was also given a second yellow card during the fracas after the final whistle for kicking the ball away in frustration of what he was enduring on the pitch. As Rose headed for the tunnel, a Serbian player ran 20 yards across to him in confrontation. As the England man ignored his opponent, abuse rained down at him from the crowd. "As I went off again there was monkey chanting, but the monkey chanting started long before I got sent off.

Rose added: "It started when we went out for the warm-up. "They started the monkey chanting straight away. I asked the lads if they could hear it and they said they could hear it. "In the first half I went down to get the ball for a throw-in and the fans started again with the monkey chants, but the first half was nowhere near as bad as the second half. "In the second half I had two stones hit me on the head when I went to get the ball for a throw-in. Every time I touched the ball there was monkey chanting again.”

Speaking to Sky Sports News, Rose was also concerned that the abuse was affecting his concentration and was worried it would cost his team the match. "After 60 minutes my mind wasn't really on the game after that. I was just so angry and it was just so hard to concentrate. "I could have cost the lads the game because I made a few mistakes through not concentrating. "Then obviously we scored. After 90 minutes' worth of abuse I just expressed my emotions as soon as we scored. "Then the next thing I know all the Serbia players have run over and were all surrounding me, pushing me and a brawl broke out."

In a statement following the game, The FA said they condemn both the scenes of racism and the confrontation at the final whistle, during which time England players and staff were under extreme provocation. The FA has reported a number of incidents of racism to UEFA following the fixture. These were seemingly aimed at a number of England's black players by the crowd. The matter is now with UEFA.

That will be done in all good time aber, peoples attitude to governments and their scams is hardening, and it will not be too long before we see the back lash from our people, we are a tolerant nation, but there always comes a point, when enough is enough, that point is being reached in Greece, Spain, and Portugal, and it will come here too, we will both unit under a common enemy then! Now back to footy dude, big brother is watching..............<ok>

Try telling that to Danny Rose! not conclusive in this Video, but I've watched others which are more audible, can't see Serbia getting away with it this time, as they have been here before on racist chants!

rubber ball...you're either playing devil's advocate to get a debate going or are incredibly miss-informed.

I'm not sure if you are trying to say that GB is worse than Serbia...? Serbia massacred it's OWN people and the hatred and fear is still bubbling away there. Whilst it's true to say we are responsible for some terrible things in history trying to link it to racism is hardly worth commenting on.

You then go on to say that we have racism because of "pounding of muslim countries" - Again so short-sighted a response I'm speechless...

The endemic problems in Serbia and some of the other central European nations is more to do with the history, religious & social problems within than anything you suggest.

Ridiculous to see that in 2012. FIFA must act, but a similar thing happened last year in Serbia and they did bugger all.

How long will the FA ban Suarez for after this, that's the question.

Very disingenuous to say they killed many Irish.

First of all, not everyone over here wanted to be 'Irish' and they still don't.

Second, the 'freedom fighters' circa 1916 (Pearce etc. were one of the world's first examples of religious terrorists). Pearce in particular was a nutcase who explicitly stated he didn't mind killing Irish women and children in the crossfire with British soldiers.

Everything from then on was a fight against terrorism. You might agree with Irish independence, but that's what it was, and is; terrorism.

My point was, which I think you know very well, that none of this has anything to do with what is going on in Serbia, their problems with racism can not be compared to any of our own colourful history, and shouldn't. You seem to be absolving them based on a "we're worse" argument which is a bit weird to say the least.

You should look into why the problem persists in that nation than try and draw half-baked comparisons with our own. Every nation has it's own history and reasons for what and how they are today.
