Im sorry, but he has had chances under two different managers and has not been anything special. He is best on loan or off our hands. Maybe he is out of his depth in the champ.

Thing is with Garner, you can't fault his attitude, commitment and work rate, he just can't score! i really like him, and if he can get that final ball in the net, he's a worthwhile team member, but until then, Dan's right, he's better off on loan. He really should change his studs though ;)...

True, although as recent Watford players go I don't think he's out of the ordinary on those fronts. In the last few years we simply haven't recruited players unless we felt that they had that sort of attitude, with the possible exception of loanees and 16-18 year olds.

As with most areas there are more similarities between past and present than people care to give the new owners credit for. As an example, the players who are making their mark are generally the ones who are really up for it, such as Almunia, Hall and Vydra. Abdi slightly less so, but he's the sort of player who will give you a good season as long as he's periodically reminded that he's droppable. Forestieri is a special case because of how fantastic he is capable of being, but in the main I don't think Zola will persist with players that he can't trust to pull their weight.

Why call a first team Championship player up to an under 19 match, only to leave him on the bench? Fair enough if he had never played for the team before, but Hoban has captained and scored for Ireland at that level. If you don't need him, give him a much-needed week off.

They've done it with Sean Murray before as well.

I suggest that involving a player at any level of international football is of more value to him, especially to his confidence, than simply giving him "a much-needed week off" even if he doesn't play. Those players not involved with international teams will still be training every day - so there would not be much difference.

Often I'd agree. That's a strong argument if we're talking about Sean Murray going to watch the under 21s for example (I disagree with that decision, but understand why the FAI felt otherwise). But captaining and scoring for the team at the weekend, and then getting dropped for the big game midweek?

If he would have trained either way, then the big difference is that we are playing with three centre backs, and have as many defenders to choose from as points in the league. Every day he spends away from our training ground is a day for someone else to show that they work well with other players, and are worthy of a run.

Last Saturday I was walking not far from Basingstoke in the morning and thought I might go and watch Basingstoke play Havant and Waterlooville in the afternoon. They were asking £15. As it happened it started hammering down while I was enjoying a pub lunch so I abandoned the idea. I doubt if the crowds would have been flocking in...

Ye gods - £15! <yikes> I wonder how the standard compares to Highland League - my local team charge £6 for standing and £7 for the grandstand.

Oh dear, we'll have to make do with Tommie Hoban. <whistle>

There were a couple of comments on the 'non-Watford' thread.
