I mentioned twitter as it was his latest lack of judgement gaff, there's no doubt he can drive a car exceptionally well, but it appears to me that outsiode of a cars cockpit there isn't really much to him.

During a good meal, a few more thoughts crossed my mind, which I feel I should share. They should be read in the context of my previous post. After all, Hamilton is only one half of the subject of this thread.

From my previous post, it should be clear that there are implications for Mercedes next year. The logic depends upon two 'ifs' which I will try to outline below.

    • If Mercedes give equal billing to their drivers, which of them will need to make the biggest compromise in terms of driving style?
My hunch is that Ross Brawn will continue as he always has, to take a pragmatic view of what is best for the overall success of the team, taking account of where monies are most heavily invested and where to expect to see the biggest return. This differs from McLaren philosophy, which in the first instance seeks to produce a car with the spectacle (spectre?!) of battle between their respective drivers. The answer to this particular 'if' is that Hamilton will likely be perceived – by Ross Brawn, Norbert Haug, Mercedes et al – to be the biggest part of their investment; and that it is unlikely that Hamilton will get true parity, as has been the case at McLaren. Rather, I expect to see him promoted!

    • If the above point is correct, it obviously raises a retrospective question about the current Mercedes pairing.
Mercedes' investment in Rosberg has been featherweight in comparison to his current team mate. Therefore it is most likely that the car has been 'developed' with the best efforts to see a return on what has been by far their bigger driver investment: Schumacher; which completely undermines my first 'if' (above) ! Taken in the widest context, this raises yet more question marks over the fundamental ability of the most successful driver ever – since he has had absolute, undisputed top billing throughout his entire career!
    - - -o0o- - -

Taken together, both of these points raise 'The Rosberg Question'. Has he ever been fully unleashed with a preferential car? – as compared to others who most certainly have, such as Alonso and Vettel, for example? Will Rosberg be steam-rollered by Hamilton; and if so, will he be forever F1's 'nearly man', who perhaps lacked the character to impose himself sufficiently to claim what others have? If so, it will be in stark contrast to surely the greatest ever exponent of this particular aspect of motor racing. Here, one man truly does stand above all others, for it is by far his 'greatest' achievement:

    Schumacher…

If one counts the years he spent at Williams alongside Nakajima, then yes. He wasn't able to challenge for points but he was definitely the undisputed team leader. He got practically all their points.

Of course, Nakajima hardly provides a fair comparison in terms of pure driving ability...

EDIT: As for your "nearly man" point, I fear there is a real danger of that happening. Let the obvious comparisons to Barichello, Heidfeld etcetera begin!

Maybe Hamiltons style is closer to that of Rosberg than we may think, therefore Rosberg may run closer to Lewis and benefit from the pairing to a greater extent.

"You could see all the way through, with an awful balance to that car with a rear anti-roll bar failure, he fought with everyone and that is Lewis as a great, great racing driver. I am immensely proud of him."
