O/T Guitars & Set Ups

Following on from our last thread on Guitars & Set Ups - I have now been round my guitars with sets of D R Strings, Nut Sauce and a file and have got more in the way of sound quality, playability and tuning stability than I ever have had. I've put some sounds on YouTube as before - just search on scampirut.

I've yet to tackle the main source of my tuning problems - Bigsby on a White Falcon but plan to get the file and Nut Sauce on this next week so I am expecting big things to happen on that!

Anyway - interested to hear what combinations of effects, switching systems and amps are out there in the Tigernation. Lets get some pics up so we can drool over each others gear.

Looking at your vids I counted 10 guitars including the Gretch you were playing, one looked like a Rickenbacker amongst the usual Strats and Les Paul's so I am way out of your league as far as owning guitars go. There was also a drum kit but no mike stand oh and not forgetting the sound effect machine on the floor. Take a bow I cannot compete.

 

Wow - That's an unexpected negative post considering a group of us had a similar thread a few months ago and shared a lot of info about our musical gear and inspirations. Take it you weren't part of that thread then Cmon ref?

Negative? Just an observation really, and yes I was part of that thread but there is no point in beating about the bush so to speak, I was admiring your set up as I cannot hope to accumulate what you already have no more than I can hope to own some of the more luxurious cars some of my friends have, no malice intended in any way. I don't have IPads, IPhones or any of the other wonderful stuff that keeps appearing with ever increasing frequency but I do admire the advancements like the self tuning Gibson. I do write my own stuff, play about with chords, lead guitar is not my forte I'm afraid, and have a music programme I like messing about with Magix Music Maker.

It was my birthday last Sunday. I was spoiled rotten,as i recieved a second hand SG copy(Vintage). The previous owner clearly wasn't the brightest,as half the stings were on the wrong way. Anyway,that sorted i'm thinking of getting a proper set up as this guitar seems really nice.

Anyone have any ideas on where best to go for this ? I was thinking Antones on Bev road.

 

Antones would be fine I'm sure, I've used Bad Dog (formerly Gough & Davy) on Saville Street before and they were fine. If you are willing to travel a bit further then Stuart Palmer at Electro Music in Donny did a very good job on a repair and set up on my 335 after I trashed the switch on it a couple of years ago.

I need a new tube amp, any recommendations chaps?

 

How powerful does it need to be, what kind of music do you play? Budget?

 

I like the Vox and the Marshall's. Been looking at the Marshall Vintage Modern 2266 50 Watt Combo Amp which looks and by review sounds quality. Im looking at spending £400-£500 max.

 

Congrats on the new guitar. Why not have a go at setting it up yourself if its already in the ball park Kempton, its not as hard as you think I been setting my own guitars up a few years now just to see if I could, there,s quite a lot of advice on the net but if you feel it would be better set up by a pro then Antones would be as good a place as the other suggestions on this thread.

 

I've got a Marshall dsl401 and its good and loud and true to the Marshall sound. You could get a new one for that kind of money or there are plenty around second hand.

I think your tuning is just part of the course with the bigsby, as you know I have the Electromatic and It does learn you to tune on the fly, but if you do sort out the problem I would be very interested in the solution if one exists.

It would be interesting to hear each guitar dry without going through the effects chain to see if its possible to get a more detailed signature of each guitar and also recorded at a better quality, it was a pity that the snare was reverberating on almost all the vids which didnt help (not a negative remark more an observation). I congratulate you on your collection, you have some wonderfull toys to play with.

Regards you amp question I dont have a main amp as such as I,m only a bedroom player so I could never crank a 30watt valve amp up to get at them thermionic harmonics, instead I have a few practice amps that I use.

I have a 5 watt valve amp called a Chimp which is really a Fender champ with some mods added, this switches down to 2 watts which I can crank up to drive the ECC83 pre amp into the 6L6 PA (I replaced the soviet PA valve with a metal vintage RCA which improves the sound no end) but isnt too loud to worry the neighbours, so ideal for recording, while the little 6 inch speaker is okish for recording etc I have a small 10 inch celestion cab which sounds really good mic,d up. I also have a 70,s Ross solid state 10 watt (Rory Gallagher and Eric Clapton have used the same model amp for recording in the studio), which has some great 70,s type tone. And my 3rd amp a little ten watt Vox Pathfinder which is another excellent little amp for recording and sounds good with my Pod Pro X3 going through it.

I do have a 60 watt 1970,s Carlsboro valve PA amp which again coupled to my pod can sound great through my Peavey cabs but dont use it as its just too loud for home use.

Yes i might just have a go at the set up. I don't want to go so far as filing the nut,and i'd be a bit nervous adjusting the truss rod,as iv'e said i doubt i'll need to. But yes,now you mention it,d.i.y might be a good skill to learn.

 

Thanks mate im liking what ive heard about them, ive played guitar for 11 years but ive never owned a tube amp. Played on only a few, think i owe it to myself!
