Green is an English businessman who has bought in when the market is low, and is trying to maximise his return. He knows little of Scottish football (or English for that matter reading that rubbish), and doesn`t represent the view of Scottish fans at all. He spouts a lot of the arrogance which has got Rangers into the merde in which they now find themselves. I don`t think Rangers or Celtic will ever be in the English league.
I'm sure probably right. But Rangers, their fans and specifically their chairman Charlie Green need to take a reality check of the predicament they now find themselves in. They have made plenty of enemies north of the border without trying to p*ss people off south of it. I had a degree of sympathy for them, their punishment was severe to say the least. Now I don't care, been on Rangersmedia website to read their fans opinions, to say the majority are deluded and bigoted is putting it mildly. They actually think an invite from the cream of European football to feast on the top table is a possible option to solve there woes, unbelievable.
You are bloody mental , why are you talking like that ????? Get a grip of yourself , your give saints fans a bad name
The same thing could happen to Crewe Alexandra, so let's forget the hypotheticals eh? I'm saying that Celtic aren't good enough now. Well admittedly he's not going to be good enough in a game against Barcelona or Bayern or any top team, but how many of those games do you have in a season? I'm not saying he's good enough to start for Celtic, but he'd have made a decent squad player and he'd do a good job not only against other SPL sides, but also against the lesser European teams that you'd face. The coverage must be proportionate to the interest in the league, it's simple supply and demand. I don't understand how the coverage can "overhype" the league. Though there may turn out to be a considerable gap by the end of the season, at the beginning it seems that United, City, Chelsea and Arsenal all have realistic shots at the title. Obviously one of those sides could hit some bad form and fall too far behind, like Arsenal so often do, but in most top divisions you know it's a two-horse race right from the beginning of the season (Barca and Real, Bayern and Dortmund, Shakhtar and Dynamo Kiev, Galatasaray and Fenerbahce, etc.). Of all the top divisions of top footballing nations, I'd say only Italy and France have a more or equally competitive race for the title. Italy probably has 4 teams as well: Juve, Milan, Inter, Napoli. I enjoy watching Serie A, La Liga and Bundesliga, but I can't agree that they're as exciting as the PL. I'm going to stop watching Spanish football because it really doesn't deserve the hype. Bundesliga seems like the most similar style of football to the PL, but half the teams are really poor defensively, and I find it more predictable. Serie A seems very unpredictable to me, but the football isn't as pleasing on the eye. It's a slow game with long balls and lots of simulation and arguing.
Green is seriously grumpy because he hasn't bought the cash cow he thought...he never expected that he would have a new club in the 3rd division with other restrictions in place. He's trying to convince himself he still owns the original Rangers with a passport to the Champions league. Bit much to name Saints when we paid money (that he needed) for one of his players rather than let it drag on to arbitration. Complete lack of class.
Nobody's arguing with that and nobody has claimed that Celtic, with their current team, would challenge for the PL title. And I've said three times now that the hypothetical situation is pointless to argue over When he was with us, we had a whole bunch of players of very similar ability in his position. He didn't take his chance when he had it, we're none the worse off for him leaving and he wouldn't improve the team or squad (other than numerically) by returning. It's not about the quantity of the coverage. Obvious there's an interest in it, otherwise SKY wouldn't pay such preposterous figures for the coverage. But they market it as the pinnacle of quality football, the BIGGEST, the BEST, the MOST EXCITING, the MOST DRAMATIC. All of which is understandable as they're selling a product. But it's essentially just a big name brand, the quality of which rarely reaches the standards the marketing hyperbole would suggest. History suggests that it's highly unlikely to be a four-way fight for the title and I'm not convinced this year will be any different. Of course this might be the year where everything changes... I guess the point is that it's too early to predict but why this year should differ from all the others is not clear to me. I could equally say that only 5 points separates the top 7 in the SPL (incidentally it's closer at the top of the SPL at the moment than it is in the EPL ) - we could be in for the most exciting SPL title race EVER! We know that's not going to happen. As for other leagues being predictable: In La Liga, at present Real are 5th, 8 points behind Athletico. In Germany, Dortmund currently sit 4th and 4 different teams have won the Bundesliga in the last 6 seasons. In Turkey, Fenerbahce are 7th and 4 different teams have won the last 4 turkish titles. I'll give you the Ukrainian league is a duopoly. Regards the "top footballing nations", the biggest 5 leagues in europe are the EPL, La Liga, Serie A, the Bundesliga and Ligue 1. Of those you admit that the french and italian leagues are as competitive and I'd argue the Bundesliga is as well (and the stats back me up). So that leaves La Liga. It's all a matter of taste of course. I'm not a huge fan of Serie A but I find La Liga by some distance the most "aesthetically pleasing" of the leagues to watch. I'd say the Bundesliga also rates very highly (for atmosphere and style of football). Haven't seen much of french football so can't really comment on that. It goes without saying that all are better to watch than the SPL
Yes good players tend to move up the footballing food chain. Obviously when they get past their prime this changes but I'm not sure how what I've said could be regarded as particularly controversial. And of course, nowadays money talks more than ever ... So off those players you listed, Dalglish left Celtic to join the at-the-time european champions, Liverpool. Macari and McClair left to join Man Utd, Nicholas went to Arsenal (then back to Celtic so not sure how that fits in). Do you mean Paul Lambert? He retired from playing and became a manager. Boruc left Celtic for Fiorentina and is now in the twilight of his career at some small club I think . So only Di Canio leaving for Sheff Wed contradicts this (no offence to Sheff Wed fans). But then he joined us from AC Milan, so maybe he was just downsizing throughout his whole career.
So only DiCanio leaving for Sheff Weds condradicts this Well seeing I was naming ex players who played for your club off the top of my head, getting only one wrong was quite a good effort, don't you think? Must admit I thought Lambert left you for Dortmund not the other way round. Boruc at the twilight of his career at a small time club??? The Holy Goalie has now reached the pinnacle....He has now been ordained a SAINT!!!!
I remember the day Keegan joined us which raised a few eye brows. Must admit that I have enjoyed reading this thread. please log in to view this image please log in to view this image
It is possible that Celtic could survive if given a place in our EPL but I do feel that they would need to spend big to do so.
He may have his point of view, but he should never have named specific clubs...obviously a man with very loose lips. Shows how wise NC is...say very little and you won't put your foot in it.
You failed to mention a large proportion of your support comes from Ireland so you are denying them a better League ? Or maybe why does such a large proportion of your nation support two sides as opposed to their local one when its clear the population can not sustain that ? There are more Celtic/Rangers fans in Dundee/Aberdeen/Edinburgh/Inverness/Stirling/Falkirk/Motherwell and Perth so dont push your one sided affair onto the English . I would love to see the bigger sides go I really would as we would have a far fairer League system , it would make it far more interesting and even but dont think for a second that it would happen as the bigger clubs know what side their bread is buttered , lets be honest with concern to the European clubs , they dont travel now why would they travel over 19 games ? So in short you would have in effect 19 home only game ? Nice one .
How could you pull in players now when Liverpool and United to a certain extent struggle when the wags all want to go to London and London only ?
Imagine all the plastic paddies jumping onboard Are you for real , supporting Celtic is as much as a republican statement as it is supporting a football club and no denying a statements about inclusiveness will change that , are you not getting done at the moment for that ? Put it this way you are not the first in Scotland to give out free bread to deny the impoverished going over to the other side are you ? Hibs started that little number .
Just read through this thread again. Interesting to look at the similarities and differences between Portsmouth and Rangers over the last year or two. Also as a Saints fan surprised how much sympathy I have for Portsmouth and their fans but only increasing scorn for Rangers and theirs. This is mainly down to the tone Green has set which has increased the bunker mentality setting to extreme. I happen to work in the field of psychology and psychiatric services and one of the first things you learn is about taking personal and professional responsibility. Or you can revert to 4 yrs old and blame everyone else for your actions. Green is very good at the latter.
Nice to see this thread still rumbling on. Definantly caused a stir with what he said and people clearly have very strong opinons on the subject matter. The apology to Villa does make me laugh. This often happens when outlandish statements are made to appease fans that it then turns out offends alot of people! I bet when Green said it he did not expect all the media to pick up on it in such a big way, hence, the statement of apology. Got to say regardless of the discussion that has gone on, it is nice to get a reading of a large number of peoples views even if they are different to my own, this for me is what this forum is all about! So regardless of any dissagrements or insults traded I want to thank you all for your views! Very interesting reading last week or so.
