I always thought Murray had talent but I never thought he would win a slam. When push came to shove, he always came up short against the top players like Federer, Nadal and Djokovic. It wasn't his talent that was in question just his mental strength.

However, 2012 has been a watershed year for him. With that defeat in the Wimbledon final v Federer, he could have just drifted away into tennis no mans land but he quickly followed that defeat by his emphatic victory at the same venue only a month later in the Olympic Final (against Federer) and then shortly followed by Britain's 75 year wait ending for a Slam winner in the US Final v Djokovic (which could go down as one the greatest finals ever) and all of a sudden Murray looks like the world number one.

Watching his game now live on Sky v Federer in the Shanghai Rolex Masters, Murray has been completely dominant, reducing Federer to unusual (for him anyway) sly under handed tactics like forcing a break for none existent rain on the court when he was struggling on his service game. Its not working Rodger the Dodger.

I have to hold my hands up and say that having won his first slam, he looks a totally different player now and who knows, there may be 4 or 5 or even more slams in his locker, as he is only 25 and potentially has another 20 odd chances in the next 5 years.

    Good on ya Andy Murray.

I'm watching as well Cest, Murray has to be the best returner of serve I have ever seen. He's totally outclassing Federer here.

McEnroe, Becker and Agassi have been the best returners I have seen in many a year and Murray would be up there if not at the top of it at the moment. Federer arguably is the greatest player to play this game but he just doesn't know what to do here against Murray's returns, even on his best 1st services.

Pleasure to watch today and I love my tennis.

I'm a passionately proud Englishman Comm but I am also a very proud Britain as well.

The two are not mutually exclusive.

All those whiplash victims claiming compensation should be made to sit & watch 14 tennis matches & then write a detailed report on the procedings before any compo can be given, <ok>.

I have to say, you could almost see a change in the lad when he won at the Olympics, you could almost see the demons coming out of his lugs, and sure enough, next slam, in the bag.

He's a superb player with all the shots, and to win majors right now with Novak, Rafa & Fed stands up to winning them against any generation of players in history.

The Olympic final, as you said, was the watershed moment. Would I be wrong to say that technically counts as a grand slam?

Most people would say they are English before they say they are British, does that make them pricks too?

He said it a time when the English people were right behind him and paying good money to see him, it was also said in a manner which come across as a slap in the face to the English people who had been supporting him. He has made a few derogatory comments about the English which I'm sure could be found somewhere.

Scotsmen always have digs at the English, it's called an inferiority complex.

    Standard.

You're right, just looked it up. What confused me was that winning all 4 slams in a year, plus the Olympics, is referred to as "the Golden Slam."
