When I leave the KC, I drive under the Clive Sully flyover and pass the old smokehouse(which is now a garage or some such thing). I thought that was the last remaining smokehouse in Hull and I always wished one of the fish merchants would take a punt and start using it again. It seems it's not the only one, there's a few left and someone's now looking to re-open one and start smoking fish again. It's a very similar situation to the one next to the flyover, they're going to knock down the industrial units and restore the smokehouse in partnership with English Heritage. please log in to view this image http://www.thisishullandeastriding....istoric-Hull/story-16692362-detail/story.html We don't do enough of this sort of thing, we should do more to remember our heritage. I'm also rather partial to a bit of smoked haddock.
I agree with you it is a dying trade (spelling of dying is deliberate as the yellow smoked fish is dyed). There is one excellent smoker up here who does the authentic Arbroath smokes, wonderful to eat, you can order through their website, highly recommended. http://www.arbroathsmokies.net/what-is-a-smokie.html
How near to Humber Street is it? They should've made it into a cool bar called 'The Smokehouse'. Brilliant, I know.
There's a couple in Long Riston who have started a smokehouse (well their website says it started in 2007), I had some of their gravelax at the Bev food fest. Very nice too! http://staalsmokehouse.co.uk/about-us/
