Latest story to do with the shirts!

The Muslim Council of Britain has warned Newcastle's Muslim players that wearing shirts carrying Wonga's sponsorship could infringe Sharia law.

Shaykh Ibrahim Mogra, assistant secretary general of the MCB, told the Independent:

"The idea is to protect the vulnerable and needy from exploitation by the rich and powerful.

"When they are lending and are charging large amounts of interest, it means the poor will have short-term benefit from the loan but long-term difficulty in paying it back."

"The Islamic system is based on a non-interest-based system of transaction," he added.

Mogra points out that former Tottenham striker Frederic Kanoute, a practising Muslim, was allowed to wear an un-branded shirt when playing for Sevilla, who were at the time sponsored by gambling firm 888.com.

If they are allowed to wear unbranded shirts then that would be a 1/3 of our team's shirts without the shirt sponsor on them! How funny.

Good on Shaykh Ibrahim Mogra, nobody should be wearing the bloodsuckers branded shirts.

Why would our players take their orders from "The Muslim Council of Britain"? They're all french speaking...

If they do, it might come down to how strict the players are to the various codes... I don't know why, but I've always thought of Ben Arfa as less obedient about it than Ba/Cisse...

It would be hilarious if they did all play without sponsorship on... I think some of the fans would want those replica kits instead!

I was thinking that! If I say I'm Muslim do I get a replica kit without Wonga on it?!

Any business that can generate enough cash to be able to afford these kinds of sponsorship deals will be found to be in some way unethical.

Also – what amount of interest is too much for a muslim to stomach? If Northern Rock were offering 100% interest free loans then it's no shock they went under and I'll be pretty shocked if Virgin Money are.

I would never use Wonga, I wouldn't recommend anyone using them or taking any loans at all if they can help it – but they are at least wholly open about the conditions of their service. You don't have to use them.

My biggest concern as an NUFC fan is frankly how good the deal is financially for the club, that the rightful SJP name is restored, and actually whether the logo will look good on the shirt. In that regard I actually quite like the logo and think the blue will suit the strip!

If it does have the capacity to upset and unsettle our four muslim players (who also happen to be amongst our best) then I might think again, but for the moment I'm pretty ok with the news...

THe Slaughter of the Innocents. Very sad. The kids don't know right from wrong. Not that they ever do much wrong.

Don't do as I do, do as I say.

It's the moral code of Islam, and I suppose it has varying interpretations. In much the same way that some particularly powerful Christians don't mind sending prisoners to different countries to be tortured, or locking people in solitary confinement without charge.

Surely it is up to the individual themselves, how they practice their religion and how they interpret the teachings, laws etc. I'm sure the club could accommodate any request but I think this guy should worry about himself instead of trying to dictate to others how they practice.

To be fair, what he is actually quoted as saying in the article doesn't suggest he's actually telling them not to wear the shirts. A journo has probably asked him 'What do you think of wonga?' and then related it to NUFC.

It definitely does suggest it as the first line is a statement from the paper saying he warns Newcastle players. But it is true enough that the quotes attributed do not exactly support this and it wouldn't be a shock if he hasn't been asked about Newcastle at all!
