The right to bear arms in the US may lead to far more deaths by shooting, in fact it obviously does, but those states who allow people to shoot someone just for entering their home now have almost no burglaries. I think we should introduce a similar law here, but expand it to include gardens and not just aim it at people. That'll teach those bastard moles.
I thought you were merely advocating that treatment for Mark Lawrenson? ... just wasted 15 minutes of my life looking for the poll to vote 'yes' ...
i understand the logic but whats to stop someone who doesnt much like you , invites you around and then shoots you under the grounds of trespassing - its a bit iffy
Even then, there are examples of people who have admitted crimes which they did not commit. Perhaps to cover-up for somebody else etc... The only situation in which I would consider it, is when the 'criminal' cannot be safely restrained from society. But, since we don't have any evil people who can walk through walls yet - it isn't really much of a proviso. Personally, i'm not eager to live in a society which enacts punishments to fulfil Neanderthal emotional urges to see people get hurt. It's like the middle-ages, with people gathering in the streets to see someone hanged. The Death Penalty is clearly not a deterrent for the type of crimes which people would use it as a punishment for (unless you want to have a death penalty for driving without insurance) - so the only reason people want it is to satisfy their own primitive urges.
If I was that little girl's father, brother, cousin or even a close friend of the family I'd happily give in to my 'Neanderthal emotional urges' where that evil **** is concerned ... and wouldn't give a rat's arse about anybody more gentile and civilised criticising me for it ....
If it was my close family member, then I would probably be similarly outraged. I imagine that I would probably support the death penalty for whoever did it to them. However, we shouldn't have a criminal justice system based on high emotions and revenge.
"The degree of civilization in a society can be judged by entering its prisons." --Dostoyevsky As appalled as I am by this crime, I cannot succumb to the mob mentality being whipped up by the media. Cases like this bring out the worst in society and in individuals. Some of the people on here have advocated horrendous courses of action on here, and justify it with “he deserves it”. If we follow them, aren’t we as bad as him? Possibly worse, because we want to take the moral high ground. And what if, for example, this guy is mentally unwell? Would you advocate the torture execution of a mentally unstable person?
Exactly Stan, if he has done it then throw away the key, but don't convict him until it is proved that he did it. My small experience of the police, is that as long as they get a result they don't care whether the person is innocent or not.
No - not unless we are capable of the same crime that he has committed. ... and the mental health issue? ... there would be an argument that anybody capable of the abuse of a child, let alone the murder, is mentally deranged .. if he knew it was wrong then that's enough for me - don't misunderstand me, I don't consider myself particularly 'hard' but I do believe that some crimes are unforgiveable .... and what does our 'humane society' do with dangerous dogs? ... we don't kennel them for life and give them behavioural therapy do we?
Given the fuss over factory farming, it's interesting that some on here seem to think that keeping someone caged up for years under constant threat of attack and with no hope of release, or that release would end their protection is more humane than ending their existence.
I suppose that I will be branded a do gooder, but please bear with me. As much I hate and detest the situation, what if he actually does not have anything to do with what has happened? How many times in the past has the legal system got it wrong? That is why long prison terms are the only way. Let who ever is convicted of Aprils demise, spend a very long time in a cell, with constant reminders of the reason for being locked up. But stop the privileges, make prisoners do mind numbingly boring work. Also stop the practice of allowing prisoners free access to the trail papers. By having the papers prisoners can gain favour by letting other prisoners read the details of the offence and witness statements. This is the reason why some plead innocence and make their victims come to court to give evidence. Hanging is not a deterrent, it's an escape for many.
I agree, we all know if the death penalty would be reintroduced it would hardly cause any pain for the criminal, I think life imprisonment with hard labour would be far worse for them than a Dignitas style drug could ever be.
Hanging is a pussy death sentence for girls, hence why I mentioned being forced to watch hours of slow torture whilst eating the ashes of your severed body parts, no one would want to go through that. And it would make great reality tv, 2 birds 1 stone
