... In 2 quality central midfielders, the question is who is there?

I am not over reacting here but for anything to work properly everything has to be in sync and at the minute that area is our Achilles heal and has been for a very long time and really should of been addressed in the summer.

We have a fantastic goalkeeper a solid back 4, 3 very good creative players who have yet to hit form and a striker who gets you goals but we seriously lack in central midfield. Once that area is sorted I think it will guarentee us top 10 year upon year but that area needs heavily invested in, it's the most important position for me, players full the strings in there and dictate the game and at the minute we have no pace, height, power, goals or creativity in there and 3 of our 5 need to go in the next 12months.

As I have said though who the **** is there? I cannot think of anyone in the prem that would add those things to us so the scouts need to get out there and get looking!

In my opinion we should go all out for this lad, offer 15m and same wages Johnson is on...

Certainly imo our next 2 signings have to be a real top quality central midfielder to boss the game for us and dictate our play another quality pacy striker to support Fletcher.

If this is January or the Summer, they have to be out next targets without doubt.

We have scouts, this fella looks ok, but to dismiss the whole premiership is mad.

i think we all know by now we need a big strong commanding midfield player who is good on the ball and can move with quality and pace. but who can we get our scouts will have to be working over time to find some one. i feel we were on the right tracks with the likes of cana but that didnt work out.we need him in quick or we will be standing still AGAIN <bubbly>

sure our scouts are doing their job and looking st potential targets but are they looking in the right places on their own bat or only looking where they are told by mon or mr short, as we all know gems can be found all over the football playing world so i would hope we are getting tips from everywhere. i know hes a mag but a young peter beardsley would be a godsend for us (dont mean actually pb but someone like him.

Maybe we should get someone to follow Carr around and pinch signings off the mags.
Or wait 'til the mags make an offer and then gazump them.

Credit where it's due, their scouting system works.

I think we should have a look at James Morrison of WBA, a really impressive footballer who can drift wie as well as central, good passer, can shoot, and makes runs to support the forwards.

He's a Darlo lad, so might fancy it, and I'd imagine he'd cost a few quid, but I really rate the lad.

I'd like to see Meyler get a bit more action to see if he can settle into the DM role, he won't get back to where he was without minutes.

maybe meyler could be the answer if mon an company can get him playing regular and have a bit of patience with him, might work if mon thinks its worth a try.

was gunna post an article on him on saturday night but was a bit wrecked so thought ad leave it till the morning which I totally forgot about until now

yes he looks a good player and would be a good addition

I seriously think we need 2 players, a big, strong ball winner who can play box to box and a tricky, skillful footballer who can play with a calm head, pick the ball up off the back 4 and set the tone of the game

two players like that could set us back 20m but that area is a huge weakness to us and once its sorted it will guarentee us top 10 for season upon season, I love Catts and I love Colback but they don't work together add 2 new faces to them two and I would clear out the other 3 in Vaughan, Meyler and Garnder.

The problem is though who is there???? IMO players we should be scouting...

    Victor Wanyama (Celtic)
    Moussa Sissikho (Toulouse)
    Etienne Capoue (Toulouse)
    Manu Fernandes (Besiktas)
    James Morrison (WBA)
    Kevin Strootman (PSV)
    Anderson (Man Utd)
    Leroy Fer (FC Twente)

Wonder what Ellis Short would think if he saw people saying "We have to invest heavily" - We should;ve gone all out for Diame from Wigan in the close season - he is a very very good player and would compliment Cattermole very well - Cattermole IMO is a must for us. One CM definitely but Cattermole is a much better player than people give him credit for.

How would anyone on here feel if they'd invested a small fortune in something then get told they need to invest heavily in it again or we'll struggle??

I'm an aquarium fanatic and spent £1000 on a new aquarium recently and would be upset if someone told me I had to spend another £100 to make it work properly or to make it look better. (just an analogy) - to be honest I'm quiter upset that the fish I bought the other week for £11 is dead!! and that's only £11 not millions

Sissokho & Morrison would make a huge difference.

Let Vaughan go, let Meyler out on loan, but I'd keep Gardner, he's a decent player, and versatile.

Man United are after Wanyama, Strootman looks potentially world class.

Though I love Catts for us to improve I think he is the one that needs replacing. I think Gardner will be moved into the middle when Bardo is fit and that he will do a very good job for us. What we need is a solid holding midfielder that can tackle and break up play like Catts but also has a good passing range and can win the ball in the air. Sissokho would be decent. Meyler looked like he could be the answer before all his injuries. I agree its now our weakest area.

I'm with Cest on this one. We have decent 'supporting' midfield players but no-one who will tske the game by the scruff of the neck, tackle well, run at players and shoot/score. Catts can only do 1 or 2 of those. I'm 50-50 on Meyler making it. But I think we need just the 1 midfielder, although I don't know who that is. Morison is v good, but a bit light. I'd rather have someone like Sandro.

Add a pacy striker and that would do us nicely. We have the cash. If Mon was given 30k to invest and has spent around 12k to date on ins/outs, he has enough to make a difference in Jan/summer but I hope he's already got players lined up.

Until then, we won't do better than 9th, but probs no worse than 13th. Rome wasn't built in a day, just look what happens when you try to do that........and let's not forget We have brought in some quality additions this summer. I just hope the current lot can click a lot better than they ave been....

it's funny how i saw the issues with central midfield weeks ago and got abuse. Now a lot more people are starting to see it

If O'Neill is not going to blood Meyler then TWO not just one central midfielders are needed in Jan!

If we don't get them expect another 13th placed or below finish.

You're not wrong about Diame mate!

There's no point having a great attacking quartet if the central midfield is too poor to help them

'Control the midfield and you control the game!'

In my opinion the current problems lie with all our midfielders not performing to their abilities..McClean and Johnson have not started firing yet and the same goes for Sessignon. I thought Colback was one of the better players for us against Man City (although that is not saying much), and it was Gardner who for me was our weakest link in that game.
Having said that, it would be great if we could get a central midfielder who was capable of getting eight to ten goals a season, and hopefully our management team will be aware of this..
