Parenting (POT- potentially off-topic)... Just call me JPF "2 Threads" tonight!

Not sure how many of you are aware, but the family seating area operates a strict "no swearing" policy for fans, which is why it is an understandable place for young lads and lasses to sit if their parents tow party politics or enjoy African-style dictatorship regimes in the home.

Now, if you want your lad/lass to sit closer to the action and thus stray beyond the Narnia and Tangled bubble of the rafters with them, should you expect the other supporters to accommodate your no-swearing preference? Would you tell someone off if they were swearing near your lad/lass? Or would you simply seat them at the appropriate venue, until you were ready to teach your child about expletives, at which point moving them beyond the bounds of Chucklevision and Jimmy Savile peek-a-boo?

Personally, if I had children (and I sympathise with those who, knock on wood(not that kind), don't want this place to see any rampant JPF offspring) I'd teach them very early on about expletives and the appropriate context (Like when we're getting f%&*^ing tw%^ted by Man f%&*^ing Utd!), because after all they form a part of our expressive language and should not be repressed. Most of them refer to sexual things anyway, and it's fundamentally perverse that society (remnants from the churches hold in centuries gone by) has formed such a juxtaposition with desperate obsession with sex, yet also placing a bad connotation on it. It's a primal act. Therefore I'd have a conversation with my lad (if we're going to role play, let's get it right. No girls! I mean Newcastle Ladies must be shocking because I've never heard of them! So I'll settle for the next Alan Shearer (only prettier because of my DNA... and ****ter at football due to the same reasons)).

To me, c%&*ing hashtags and d*&^head texting-derived butchering of the language is far worse!

But, at the end of the day, it's just like Not606, you can choose if you want to listen to swearing or not.

my son has sat with me for the last 9 years (he's only 14 now)
hear's a lot of bad language around him, but that's from me <blush>
but he knows what's said at the match stays at the match

by the way I don't say words like F and C
but I will question the ref's parentage

 

How old are these kids? I think around the end of primary school is a time when kids will hear words all the time and learn to use them themselves, and at this age I would be telling my kids where to and not to use them (my parents house being strictly off limits for example!)
Any younger than that age though and I'd hate to think my kids were in and around a mass of foul language from fans.

 

Sounds fair enough to me like, expletives are f%&*ing fantastic in the right situation. Correctly timed, it gives a joke an extra 10% and an opposition goalkeeper that smidgen less comfort...


Not to mention relieving the aches and pains of supporting the Toon... Probably best to get them into it young so they're skilled at it!

I think a parent really should have the prerogative when teaching kids stuff like this and take into account what's best for their children. But kids sometimes sit around me, and you're in a dilemma... The kid is there with the parent away from the family area, but are they going to jump on me if I tell the ref he's a w&*^er? I mean, let's face it, they're going to learn at some point that these guys are away from wives and partners at the weekends, so it's obviously pretty factual as a statement...

 

Sit with my bairn in the family section and any scroates who swear get a stare which they heed.
