So Grant Holt thinks it's a disgrace. I wasn't picked for England either & do I go & complain publicly? http://www1.skysports.com/football/...-swipe-at-the-England-squad-selection-process
You just have, I'm biding my time at the moment. Though i am looking at my Irish ancestry as a fall back position.
To be fair you can see what he is saying, Hodgson has called up Adam Johnson and Andy Carroll both just coming back form injury, both haven't played much this season. He could have called up Lallana/Routledge, joint 2nd top assists in England and Lambert/Crouch, both joint 4th top scorers.
Holt's only scored one goal this season, I'm not sure he can complain too much. And I'd hope it takes more than 4 goals in the Premier League to win an England cap. Lambert is doing well this season but England form, not yet for me. If he keeps scoring like this til Christmas then look at him but not after 4 goals! I think the England squad is just about right, there are a couple who I'd maybe change but not many.
I've not been called up either, but Glen Johnson has I don't know what I have to do to get a cap - it's an outrage. Hodgson out!!!!
I don't think he means (well i hope he doesn't) that he should have been called up for these games, think he means while he was scoring goals. I'd agree majority of the team looks good to me but those two, Carroll and Johnson, shouldn't have been called up due to them only just coming back from injury. Your probably right that it could be too early picking on form but for just two squad players that would probably just warm the bench i'd have given it a go.
It does annoy the hell put of me when a youth player with 4/5 professional appearances at a big club (or Liverpool) gets picked before a player who's been putting in consistent performances a bit further down the division. He's got a point I suppose.
I genuinely think Holt is annoyed at not being picked for the friendlies after the Euros, which is why he's come out with this outburst. I wouldn't have picked either of them for this squad, but I can see why they have been, they haven't been out for long and it's always good to have a bit of continuity in the squads. I think in one sentence you've summed up most of English football's problems, even though he turned out to have a decent Euros.
How did I miss that??!! From now on I shall be known as Andy Payson. That should see me get a call up
I fully agree with Holt and the sentiments raised, I really felt that Graham (and to an extent Holt) should at least have been given a chance in the run up to the Euros considering that Rooney was banned for 2 games and that the other English strikers were woefully out of form. It definitely holds true for the point TWF points out, Raheem Sterling being considered for call ups on the back of 3-4 league games for a team near the relegation zone who are historically big....whereas players like Dyer who have consistently performed for an entire season weren't considered at all. The favouritism shown to players at 'historic' clubs winds me up something chronic, how Henderson and Downing went to the Euros was utterly staggering
Maybe it has something to do with the fact that Grant Holt is not good enough and has not yet scored this season. Just a thought.
I agree with you Bruce Bones it is a ****ing disgrace you haven't been picked for England either. I will frequent the Tube so I can tell Roy what I think.
I suspect Ashley Cole may no longer be included in that squad: "Hahahahaa, well done #fa I lied did I, #BUNCHOFTWATS" So Baines and Gibbs to be the two left backs in the squad from now then?
Thought Grant Holt did everything right and the FA overlooked him. To be the second highest goalscorer in the Premier League to be then overlooked in favour of Andy Carroll must be a pretty big kick in the teeth!
Grant Holt's scoring record is proof that the top-scorer isn't always the best striker. He's a big ugly bugger and nowhere near as good as Carroll at doing that. Rickie Lambert is also a better player in my opinion because he's a target man who's also excellent with the ball at his feet. Was that Ashley Cole tweet real by the way?
