"......two much of that (lecturing about issues) and not enough football....." I am sure most of us would sooner see Shirley Williams than over-paid gravy train ex-pros like Alan Shearer

"We do show the football, and if the football is a 0-0 that's what we show."

    "Good lad."

    Fantastic.

Delivered with a pointed finger. Brilliant.

I had a grandad who I think carried many similar gestures and characteristics to Clough.

A very argumentative and difficult man. But funny.

My Grandad was a sergeant major in the East Yorkshire Regiment.

He had a Royal Enfield that he claimed could drive straight up the outside wall of his house.

He was absolutely certain that it really would drive up the side of his house, mainly because it would make it better than a Jap bike and for those stationed in Burma during the war, outperforming a Jap bike was the number one priority, even if it was completely untrue.

He'd never accept he was wrong about anything, particularly the fact that at the end of his life(RIP), there were a bunch of slitty eye fuzzy wuzzies attacking Castle Hill daily(in partnership with cockroaches the size of cats).

You're grandad wasn't Mr Jones the butcher was he?

They don't like the cold steel up 'em!

Class video. Only bettered by him smacking his own fans when they invaded the pitch.

have you seen the clip where Clough talks about his method of debating with players. words to the effect: "....I listen to their view point, then we talk about it for a while then we decide I was right....". Does that sound like your grandad?

I also heard a story from Gabby Yorath (or whatever she is now called). She said that apparently her Dad, Terry Yorath, whilst at Leeds requested a meeting with Brian Clough in his brief spell as Manager. Yorath said he had been promised a wage increase by Revie on an informal basis to be implemented at the start of the season after Revie had left for the England job. She said that her Dad had prepared a reasoned argument, with supporting evidence and a full case well presented for the increase. Clough listened attentively apparently for quite some time without speaking then thoughtfully replied: ".....and what is your name son?"..........absolute class!!!!!!!!!!

He was quite similar, though he never panicked.

We used to have to go over to see him at Bilton Grange every Saturday, he'd cook us a plate of mince, followed by stewed apple(army rations), then we'd have to watch Big Daddy and Giant Haystack, before doing the pools.

My husband's uncle served in the East Yorkshire Regiment(EYR) in WW1 and was awarded a posthumous Military Medal after being killed in France aged 18. He was the eldest of a family of 13 kids brought up in a dockland terrace in east Hull.(My mother- in -law was No.7).

My husband joined the EYR army cadets as a teenager, not to follow in his uncle's footsteps, but because they wanted football players for their East Hull unit. That season they won the Hull and District Army Cadet Cup and he left shortly afterwards( as a corporal). It remains his only football trophy after a career in 3 countries spanning 30 years!

A little anecdote regarding the Military Medal. When my husband's grandmother died in Hull in the the early 50's she left nothing but a request that her son's medal be shared between her remaining children by each looking after it for a while. Shortly afterwards it disappeared and it became a family vendetta about who had "stolen" the medal. Move on over 60 years and finally it emerged in Sydney earlier this year being held by one of my husbands cousins. The only problem here is that he is no longer on speaking terms and so the story concerning the medal remains untold. A pity really as I know he would love to see it for the first time.
