It really doesn't bother me that the term United is used to categorise Manchester United as opposed to any other team that has United in their name.
When asked which team l support l either say The Toon, and not everyone knows straight off who The Toon is mind you! Or l will say Newcastle.
I do agree that Manure do not have a monopoly on the term, but most footie fans and commentators call them United and few people who follow football would not know which team was being referred too by that term.
Let them have it, it really doesn't matter in the big scheme of things.

I thought the term united was used to describe the coming together of two teams into a new team.
I'm sure someone once said Man U weren't....?

They just wanted to be as big as us which is why they used United.

Originally they were called Newton Heath or something like that! And changed to Manchester United in 1902, but from what l can see they did not unite with another club, so technically they are Manchester NOT United lol

FYI: Leeds United were not formed from the merger of two clubs either.

A few more to throw into the ring.

    Oxford United
    Torquay United
    Carlisle United
    Sheffield United
    West Ham United

Can't imagine why Carlisle came to be called United. Was it because somebody thought it sounded good, or was there a special reason for it?

<ok> I agree. I understand why some people get upset about it, but personally I wouldn't refer to us just as United anyway. Whoever I was speaking to might think I supported Manchester United (<yikes>) because it is generally commonplace (whether you like it or not) to use it in reference to Manchester United.

What's worse is that nobody ever talks about United biscuits anymore and I used to be very fond of them.

I think it is just that assumption that everyone knows who you mean when you just say United that fans of other Uniteds get annoyed about. Those who do refer to Man U (I agree, just as easy to say) as just United are wrong and innacurate to do so and should wake up to that fact. If Man U fans want to do it so what, but the media should know better. Are the most successful City going to be called just that? Or the most successful Rovers? etc etc etc. No. so stop doing it with United you ignorant fools.

I wrote up a rather longwinded article on the matter on Old606. If there's any way I can find it I'll get it linked. <ok>

I am so upset about this issue. How dare people refer to Manure as United. Who gives a ****, I'd never refer to us as United anyway! They can all call them united for all I care. We're still gonna get stuck into the bastards come Sunday! Boom.

We never let them sing at our place anyway. As soon as they start the 'united' chant we add Toon and take over it, always find that funny.

Just do what City fans do and call them "Red ****e" :)

Anyway, I thought the "United" name came from when Newcastle West End merged with Newcastle East End?
