he knows a donkey when he sees one,he then sold him to us.Turner...oh dear,he is ****in ****e.The 2 games he has started we have let in 10 plus at fault last week. Now starting to get a wee bit pissed off.Liverpool are not that good really yet they scored 5,they wont finish in the top 6 thats for sure.Turning point of the game was 47th min where we missed a sitter and they went straight down the other end and scored to make it 3-0,game over.At 2-1 we might have made a game of it.
Has had a torrid time, needs dropping for his own good and ours. Bennett is a good defender, but goddam I hope Bassong is back soon.
Turner 11 goals conceded while he was in defence over 3 games. Bassong 2 goals conceded in the 3 games while he was present. That just tells you the story really. Bennett has to be ahead of Turner, I have no idea why he has been put so far back in the order I do not know.
Agree that Turner is poor, but their second goal came from a poor pass from Garrido to Turner. Garrido was also at fault when Gerrard scored, loosing Sterling in the build up. IMO,and I have said it before,we need to revert back to the team we had last year.(Bassong the only addition) This "Leeds" midfield dont work.Snods is lazy.cant run, cant cross, cant defend.puts pressure on Martin,Bennett better option. Howson has no real vision , Fox a better option. I would stick with Johnson Up front, revert to Holt and Jacko.
Turner almost single handedly kept Hull in the Premier League during their brief stay. He went to Sunderland the following season and Hull were relegated. When we bought him the Sunderland fans were singing his praises and mostly sorry to see him go. To dismiss the guy as a "donkey" or compare him to Theoklitos is utterly ridiculous. When Morison robbed Mertesacker in much the same way last season and scored against Arsenal, did that make Mertesacker "a donkey"? We need better balance on here as well as on the pitch.
I hear what you're saying but that was a few years ago now, besides the title of the thread is spot on. Turner was culpable for Liverpool's first three goals in my opinion, the worst of which was the third when he almost sythed down Suarez, which would have cost a penalty and been a red card had Suarez not jinxed past him, then he lay on his arse when Garrido cleared it, realising only as the ball fell back to Suarez that he might be able to stop him from getting another cross in! At the moment he is a complete liability.
It's no coincidence in my opinion are defence has fell to pieces without Bassong. I don't know about Turner, difficult start for him and obviously hasn't won many fans but bit fickle to turn on him at levels I have seen so soon. He deserves more chances and I've been reading Norwich fans say he shouldn't wear the shirt again, which is quite ridiculous.
You also need to take the blinkers off. You have to take each game at a time and assess each game on its merits. Not blindly call for Hughton's head. That is stupid beyond belief. But neither is it sensible to think that Turner should be playing at CB in our team. Russell Martin and Ryan Bennet have both shown that they are far more capable of playing that position. Turner has been out of his depth in both games he has started and by most posts, responsible in most part for Newcastle's goal. Just because you like him doesn't mean other posters are wrong and need "better balance". The more you spurn other peoples opinions as "ridiculous" makes your own posts less credible.
As Turner has made two or three big mistakes now people have turned on him. So now unfortunately people criticise him more when he makes a small mistake than they would if another defender would have made the same small mistake. Also they don't praise him when he does something good which is largely ignored.
Chris, I'm not defending his performance yesterday. But I don't think he did much wrong at Newcastle. More particularly I don't think there is any justification for the vilification that is being handed out. Last season the fall guy was Ward; made to look equally bad by Liverpool that day.
redruth, I don't "like" or "dislke" Turner. And as I said in reply to Chris, I am not defending his performance yesterday. I respect other people's opinions when they are balanced and proportionate: likening Turner to Theoklitos, and calling him a "donkey" and unfit to wear the shirt, are neither.
Can I just remind you all, those of you heavily criticising Turner, at the start of this pre-season, how many of us were convinced that Leon Barnett would be on his way out of Carrow Road? Give the lad a chance, you don't become a bad player overnight, but you do lose form and suffer a lack of confidence at times!
I think Tettey and Fox are our best options. Howson was great last year, but operated a bit further up the pitch and got on the ball a lot more. I like E.Bennett, he works hard and tracks back and can also cross a ball. I still think he'd make a fantastic right back though. Ryan Bennett was probably out best defender at the back of last season, but hasn't had a look in since the Fulham game.
I see the Newcastle goal differently to you Robbie. There have been a few occasions already this season where Turner sits 5 yards behind his fellow centre back, thus allowing a double decker bus to drive through the heart of our defense, let alone skillful players like Ben Arfa or Gerrard who can play sliderule pinpoint passes into their front men. If he sits so deep there is no hope for our back four to hold any kind of control on the attackers running in behind players either side of him.
Very true Dave. I wouldn't say that I would never have him wear the yellow and green any more but at the moment he would not instill a single grain of confidence in me such has been his poor showings.
I agree Chris, he was at fault in the Newcastle game for the exact reason you mention. I think he drops deeper because he lacks pace, I think he may be used to/more comfortable with a deeper back line than we naturally play or he is conscious of his lack of pace. I can't be sure. He was a very solid plate at Hull and when he wasn't injured, at Sunderland. I do think that, eventually, him and Bassong will be our strongest option but it looks an age away at the moment.
Just a quick question really, was Ayala not good enough for you or did he leave for other reasons, i thought he had decent potential when he was with us. Cheers
He spent the end of last season injured, I believe he's been loaned out to get some game time and to get up to match fitness, whilst assessing his ability to remain free from injury!
