Shanks made a lot of tongue in cheek comments, most of which went over peoples heads. Only an idiot would believe that he was serious when he said 'Football isn't a matter of life and death, its more important that that''. That comment on so many occasions has been taken out of context, and has been used against him. What he said in not so many words was, he was honest his entire life and never ever cheated anyone. He gave his 100% always, and he expected his players to do likewise.

Another one of his tongue in cheek comments was ''If Everton were playing in my back garden, I would pull the blinds''. In reality, he lived behind Evertons Bellefield training ground. There is so many comments and all of them were tongue in cheek.

Such a baffling mix of good sense and absolute lunacy.

It's already been pointed out by Page Moss - Shankly said it about Dixie Dean but it was ok as it was just a joke apparently

You are ignorant of the fact that the chant has nothing to do with 99.9% of the people that it is song to! For some reason you think it is justifiable to chant 'murderers' to a group of people that have no relationship with the 'murderers' (which itself is an ignorant chant as those that were involved were guilty of manslaughter, not murder). Their only link is that they support the same team, the same as you support the same team as Ian Huntly! <ok>

It wasn't a joke Dan, it was a testament to Dean's fame and popularity on both sides of the Mersey.

"Therefore, the song 'if it wasn't for the scousers we could stand' is in my opinion in reference to Heysel, when the trouble caused by your fans first set the seed for all seater stadium.

    Ergo, not about Hillsborough."

Oh boy, that's sweet - if you really believe it! I suppose "96 wasn't enough and "You killed your own fans" was about Heysel too? :emoticon-0104-surpr

in fact, just sing all the songs you want about Hillsborough, and then pretend, in that 'we're the victims here' stance you hypocritically take, that they're ALL about Heysel, as you all seem ****ing crushed that's all you've got left now since the Hillsborough Report. As Jip so eloquently put it, it's not fair to ask you to attend that game, it's significance and so forth and expect you NOT to sing what the hell you want. It's not as if you're City fans at your 50th Munich anniversary, so how dare anyone expect otherwise? I wasn't arsed anyway (except for "they provoked us first!" victimhood ****e y'all spurted when thousands got caught), just enraged that IF one/two Liverpool fans did this on that day above all others they should be executed.

Talking of Munich rememberances at OT, what would happen if one occurs when Liverpool fans are visiting? What if they sang ATV at you? Would you assume "They must be referring to our chasing a Palace fan to his death under the wheels of a bus during our semi with them"; or "It must be about our stand up riot in Rome a few years back"; or "is it about our fans jumping the turnstiles at Wembley in the CL final against Barca?"; or perhaps you'd think it it was about alleged ticketless fans causing a crush that spilled onto the pitch against Lille? No? Thought not.

Alan, thought I'd replied earlier, but obviously not. Everton fans, the ones in this country who REALLY suffered because of Heysel, have never sung - not to my knowledge anyway - 96 Wasn't Enough,You Killed Your Own Fans and other such ditties. Therefore I believe them that when they say they have sung that song it was about Heysel. And NEVER in a million years would they have sung it on Sunday, especially if their club and manager had specifically asked them not to. In fact, they were singing JFT96 at Leeds; you couldn't even make it to half time without singing about Hillsborough (allegedly) and Munich.

So this is another 'tit for tat', your club is worse than mine circular argument?

If Shankly was using the occasion to just have a dig at Everton then that to me is out of order. I suppose it depends on the context in which it was said, the mood at the time he said it etc etc...

If it was solely said to be nasty about Everton then as I said, I would think it was offensive.

I still don't get your point in asking me the question though, if I was trying to justify some chant or offensive comment then I could see what you were getting at by asking me that question...but I am not! <ok>

Btw, I know I haven't said the slate is "Wiped clean" because of the Hillsborough Report. Haven't seen ANY such claim on our board. Please correct me by proffering the offending post/thread.

Oh how very convenient of you to miss the last line of my post, well ****ing done. No, I don't actually ****ing believe it you cretin, I was using it as an example of how easy it is to twist things to suit your own story. Which is what you've been doing from the start of this thread. Glad to clear that up, seeing as you and billy boy are too ****ing stupid to get it. Even though I almost literally spelled it out. And if someone did sing atv to United fans then I guess they'd react. That would be provocation. Sound familiar?

Donga, you are unbelievably tedious. No offence like but surely you have better things to do with your time than write those long diatribes!

Firstly, I am not ignorant of that. I know that the vast majority of Anfield regulars won't have been at Heysel. But the fact is that many (not all) LFC fans have never truly accepted the culpability of their own for Heysel. They may not be killers themselves but they have condoned and excused the killers. YNWA they say. Surely that shouldn't extend to the defence of hooligans who caused 39 deaths?

Secondly, the Ian Huntly analogy is ridiculous. Was Huntly at a United game, singing United songs, supposedly supporting his team when he committed murder? Did he kill the girls purely because they followed an opposing football team?

The Ian Huntley analogy is in unbelievably bad taste.

He was moaning about bad taste earlier. So has he now dropped to our 'level' and reacted to provocation? After complaining about tit for tat chanting earlier too? Double hypocrisy from BBT!

As clear as "Where's your famous Munich song?" sung on a day that your own club asked you not to sing any songs about football-related disasters. <ok>
