Never a truer thing said than offence is never given, only taken. For those who are struggling with the concept it means someone is only offended if they choose to be so. You have the choice not to be offended, outraged, disgusted, how you feel is down to you and you alone. Even if what is said is meant as offensive. It is not weak to ignore or let a deliberate attack of words go by without response. Nobody's status is in danger. Unfortunately many discussions here end up as 'my balls are bigger than your balls', 'I'm a genius you are a cretin because I said so'.

Never assume anything. The biggest difference between an idiot and a wise (and usually happier contented) person is how many assumptions they make. Even if your assumptions prove true eventually that just means you got lucky that time.

Why Dfer? Why this thread? We're all mature adults here, we don't need to be told this. Well basically most posts here make me laugh with the inanity, but if possible I'd like a higher quality of debate than 'my opinion is......your opinion is wrong because you're an idiot.', and yes yes yes many here do need to be told this. Fair enough though all are welcome to ignore this, but if you don't ask you don't get.

Cut this Drogs if you feel it's all a pile of dross.

Debating 's about listening AND talking! There's lots that like to talk! There's those that sit and listen! There's not a lot that seem to be able to do both! I like to think I can because I enjoy doing both! Ho Hum!

The first half of that OP is possibly the best contribution I've seen on this Web-site since its inception a year and a half ago. Well said Sir!
(The last paragraph takes away from it somewhat but how and ever)

There's far too many people just waiting to be offended. And when people don't like another's opinion, they all too often start calling it out of order and start complaining to the Mods who have a hard enough job as it is without having to baby-sit these sensitive souls.

There's a lot of whinge-bags on these Boards and in life in general that should just grow up.

A good augment Dfer at least it wasn't sourced from a newspaper or a tweet and cut & pasted. Long live original thought, sack the rest. <ok>

Why make that comment, its obviously aimed at someone with the intention of offending them... Was the point of this post by Dfer who put it so brilliantly to move away from pointless snipes and digs? And actually act like adults and discuss relevant sports topics in the papers, tweets or just general random footballing stuff. This forum slides more and more! You made a pointless comment, and i have now done the same.

Well I'll make it a hat-trick then. Surely Ossie's right in a way, its hard to converse with anybody whose just going to cut & paste a link for effect and then withdraw offering no other contribution. Like the man say's get rid of the dross and we can converse sensibly until the cows come home.

I don't have a problem with any poster (I think), nothing discussed on a soccer post board is worth the grief. I also post regularly on a science topics board and there same inane behaviours went on there so much so that a unique and challenging chat room became a teenagers slagging match hell, even when the posters were 50 yrs old + and the room died an ignominious death. I can dance. I post a lot on the BBC Strictly boards, same thing happens there. So called adults cuss and threaten each other over ballroom dancing.

This thread is not an attack on the Chelsea board here or NOT606, just a statement of fact. It is more an incitement of our society. It is not my job or desire to change anybody's opinion. I seek other's opinions with my posts or just state mine. I don't look to be right and really don't care if I'm wrong. This is my posting philosophy and if you like it maybe you'd like to do the same.

I like to imagine crazy way out stuff, like what if all defenders should be made to train as forwards and vice versa. Would it improve a team? I find though often no one even tries to conceptualise such a thing and just shoots it down with out kicking it about and having some fun. Of course such training won't happen, but that shouldn't stop people conducting thought experiments. Seems though people need to have thoughts in the first place before they can experiment.

I didn't mention Ajax or total football as in the past I have actually tried to discuss this on the old 606 board and discovered no one had heard of it. I was hoping to lead into that Ajax philosophy but every reply I got was about me being a crazy mad bear. I've even discussed this in e-mails with Pat Nevin, and in Dferchitchat with Ron Harris. Two people who can definitely debate sensibly (well only if Chopper has had enough sleep). Both by the by think it won't work in the Premiership these days or that players could hack it.

When I played volleyball, you rotated around the court after every winning point, so you played in every position. Everyone had to know how to serve, set and spike. I have played every position on a football pitch. Yes I do not like central midfield, but I was reserve keeper. I was a left back because a million and one guys could be and wanted to be a striker, many had no idea how to tackle. When I did play striker I was great at it, but boy did I have to endure the moans of those who considered themselves God's gift to attack.

  14. My "Mouser Watch" thread (over on the Spurs board) is a stunning example of an objective, non-partisan, and non-wumming look at all things 'Pool. it provides a very important service to both non-Mousers and Mousers, in establishing a platform for honest, open, and objective debate about 'Pool's dreadful fall from grace and the delusion of the average Mouser. Even some Mousers now consider it to be an important and valid resource.

But would such a thread be tolerated on the Mouser board? Absolutely not. And if I wasn't already banned from there, I'd certainly be banned for daring to start such a debate, and for holding up a mirror to Mouser delusions. I cannot count the times I have told Mousers "don't shoot the messenger!" They rarely listen, of course, and consider me a wum (which I am not).

It is very true, as the OP states, that offense is not given, but taken. It is hardly my fault that Roy Rodgers is dragging 'Pool down to Championship level, or that 'Pool's Yank owner has vowed to sell off all of the clubs half-decent players and get in players like Carroll and Downing.

I'm using 'Pool and the Mousers as an example, here, but I'm sure most of you can think of other examples of where a certain class of poster is all too keen to take offense at the slightest hint of any truth being spoken. It happens quite a lot on this board, as well, actually.

HIAG your 'mouser' thread is very amusing if not a little trite, but the thing is who are you trying to kid?

Chelsea,Utd and Liverpool have all been European Champions in recent years and your near neighbours Arsenal even reached a final, the list of trophy winners since Spurs last trophy win is massive, the delusion is purely with you lad and we only humour you.:emoticon-0100-smile

You are a character HIAG, that can be said.
