what a boring game of football that was! doncaster we so bad we never had to get out of 1st gear! could have been 6 or 7 if the keeper hadnt made 3 or 4 top class saves, their defends hadnt made some very good blocks and... wait for it... IF OUR FINISHING WAS BETTER! Kane missed ANOTHER easy chance when, with the goal begging he side footed it toward the only part of the goal any defender could block. The Jacko missed after rounding the keeper and hitting the side netting. Holt was, again, pretty poor. he link the play well on occasion but all too often his time was spent jumping at players rather than the ball or moaning at others. Chris Martin is so bad I dont know how he gets picked ever! on the up side, we won, I thought Butterfield looked very composed and tricky, tettey scored and also looked a busy character who gets about the pitch. Fox was back and also looked calm in possession (which I think we have missed), and fit again Elliot Bennett finally got picked at right back and looked very good there! Think we probably would have benefited from better opposition because the performance stank of a team playing a much worse team and not needing to try. still like I have mentioned, there were plenty of positives. BRING ON LIVERPOOL ON SATURDAY! OTBC
Doesn't bode well though does it.If we can only manage 1-0 at home to a side like Doncaster. We really need to win on Saturday, anything less and I'm afraid I am going into Private Fraser mode.
so let me get this straight. it was boring, but we could have scored 6 or 7. make your mind up moan moan moan, even when we win - i give up with some fans. we effectively played our second string and still won convincingly, even if the scoreline suggests otherwise. we bedded some new players in and others coming back from injury and we've a realistic chance of beating a spurs side who will probably not be at full strength and could conceivably reach a cup quarter final.
ridiculous post cruyff, truly ridiculous. expected better from you. i really can't believe this thread!
Agree with this. Didn't we lose 0-4 to MK Dons last year? That didn't have an adverse effect on our season.
I know it was only against Doncaster, but tettey looks like a very decent signing. Good passing, always looking for the ball, likes to get forward when he can and protects the back 4 well. Also what was pleasing was ward's performance, he knows his situation but a very professional performance!
agreed with this. we did enough and saw some new faces who will be pushing to get in the first team squad for the league. we've a good tie in the next round - put out a strong side against spuds and we'll have a chance
Time will tell.I only hope that I am not on here in three months time saying "I told you so". At Premiership level I just don't know where goals are going to come from.We are the lowest scorers already and clean sheets usually only yield a single point. We need to attack more and risk getting thumped. The ignominy of ending up the season with twenty in the goals for column would be meat and drink to the likes of JWM. I usually have a bet with an Ipswich mate that we end up higher in our league than they do in theirs.I'm avoiding him at the moment.
"I usually have a bet with an Ipswich mate that we end up higher in our league than they do in theirs.I'm avoiding him at the moment. " So? I'd take 17th in the Prem over 16th in the championship any day, even if they are "higher"
people who say 'i told you so' are strange people as far as i'm concerned. its like they want to be proved right just to get one over people even at the expense of something the want to happen. who does that benefit? we do not need to 'risk' anything at all. by making us better at the back first we give ourselves a platform to build on. its not as if we aren't attacking teams and creating chances, its just we aren't taking them! its got bugger all to do with being more attacking!! with a little more luck and less than inspired goalkeeping we'd have at least 5 in the goals for column - would you be moaning then? and who on earth cares about what warky thinks?!?! his team are in dire straits at the moment - ours is a matter of tinkering away from being very good.
and anyone who thinks we are dull at the moment need to cast their minds back a few years. i remember games under the likes of hamilton and worthington where we didn't even have a shot on or off target in 90 minutes. failing to scoring goals is not an indicator of whether or not a team is boring or not - we played some very attractive football last night and have done all season - we have many players who can interchange positions and offer flexibility all across the park, making us good to watch. for pity's sake, have some bloody patience. we are close to being very good.
I assure you that I definitely want to be proved wrong on this one. Before the season started I predicted that we would end up with fewer points than last season, but would stay up.It could be we've been unlucky.Either West Ham,QPR or both could have yielded three points and we would have been sitting pretty with 7.But we havn't got the excuse of hard fixtures like QPR and Southampton have.I do find it odd that I am not entitled to my opinion that we are not going to do well this season,it's just a feeling that I have.I think Holt's lack of goalscoring form is the main reason and I think that could be as much as anything that he is not getting the kind of chances he did last year.
cruyff, good to hear and i like you predicted we would get less points than last year - i think most fans did - but it was the below comment which i take issue with: "Doesn't bode well though does it.If we can only manage 1-0 at home to a side like Doncaster. We really need to win on Saturday, anything less and I'm afraid I am going into Private Fraser mode." only managing a 1-0 win against donny? i hate it when people dismiss a side like that. we played our reserves, players needing games cos they're new or coming back from injury and won comfortably playing some decent stuff. private fraser mode if we don't beat liverpool? read that statement back to yourself - you may feel embarrassed.
Agree with supers on this, too many people panicking to what a consider a fairly strong start to season performance wise. Been more unlucky in front of goal rather than woeful and once Holt actually has a clear cut chance he'll get a few. I got think of one occasion this season where Holt has had a decent chance.
How bizarre that after last season everyone saying we need tighten up and not ship goals.....now thats happening people saying we need to go for broke and risk getting thumped?? Agree with Supers that with a touch of luck we would have higher goals for as the chances are coming. If anything the team looks better balanced, and what with players coming back from injury who are arguably better than the players we been playing then its only a matter of time until it all clicks. So much so that I believe we will pick up 4 points from the next available 9 and im sure we all be happy with that!!!!
he had a couple last night but the keeper made some good saves, one in particular which he clawed out of the top corner - that would have been a goal 9 times out of 10. typical.
Should have said other than last night. I havnt seen anything from the game yet just read bits and bobs on it. Sounds as though butterfield and tettey played well. Nice to hear that we were shooting a bit more as well, think sometimes we can actually over play it and wish someone would have a pop now and than.
