The player will make it clear to his manager Alan Pardew that his No 1 priority is to remain at St James’ Park, with talks scheduled between United and the player’s agent Willie McKay at the end of the season.

United had hoped to tie down the player of the season front-runner back in January when talks broke down, but despite national newspaper reports earlier this month that Barton was on the brink of quitting Toon, the Chronicle understands that the Scouser has ALWAYS intended to stay on Tyneside.

And although United and Barton twice came close to an agreement in January, there has been no animosity within the black-and-white ranks, with Pardew even making the one-time England international captain during Kevin Nolan’s suspension.

Barton has kept a dignified silence on the situation in the last couple of months and simply wants to concentrate on football rather than complicate the situation.

A source close to Barton told the Chronicle: “Joey wants to stay at Newcastle because he is happy here.

“He may be opinionated at times, but he hasn’t forgotten what Newcastle did for him during his time at the club, and he’s got a lot of respect for all of the staff there, from the manager down.

I read this before and I thought it was great news, but it's based on a quote from the legendary "source" so I'm waiting for something from Barton or Pardew first.

I think he's jst looking for the right deal. Apparently we held talks with him and had verbally agreed on a wage of £50k a week for 5 and a half years (back in January) but when we put it in writing it was for £30k a week and for only 2 and a half years. Think he just wants to finish his career here and get about what he's on now which is about £60k.

I think we should put him on a 4 year deal at £50k a week and I think he'll take it.

  7. Give him a 3 year extension, and if he's still playing well, then add 2 more years on after that.

3 year deal would be the best compromise, 5 is too much

He's 29 when his current deal ends, so I'd give him a 4 year extension with an option for one more, personally.

Agree with this. If he is willing to accept a 3 year deal I would be happy with that too.

Barton 7 on the back of next season shirt it is then. Hoping for a change of luck of Carroll 9 on the away shirt (may donate that to one of these footie shirt charity things) and Jose Enrique on my home shirt (there's still hope there yet, stay with us Jose).

On second thoughts I shouldn't really get any players name that I want to stay on my shirt. Had N'Zogbia a few years ago and Milner. ****ing hell I'm unlucky. Maybe I'll get 'Ashley' on next seasons shirt....

Agree with everyone who says a 3 year extension is the way forward.

This will improve my optimism for next season if we can get this man tied down.

    Sol Campbell!!

I remember when Woodgate was here I got my top at JJB and got home to see a bid had been accepted, I was absolutely gutted. I went straight back to JJB and got my money back!
