How can you rate this thug with no talent.wish he was playing against us for two reasons,
    1.he is hopeless
    2.he would not last long.
Get shot of him and get some creativity (that you are lacking )in.

Lee Cattermole the only player with higher amount of red cards than IQ. Wooden heed.

We drop too deep when we do get a chance we'll be too far back to do anything about it.

This. We now have to change our style of play for next couple of games before the mags as we dont have any other player like catts in the squad. He covers more ground than anyone and when not being a d!ck and getting red carded he is very influential (not particularly in an attacking sense mind you). Maybe now we will be forced to play slightly more attacking which is not hard at the moment!!

    1st time for everything.
I agree with Mr here, Catts was fantastic vs West Ham, it's disappointing but he goes straight back in the team for me.

Yep - this for me too - MR has got it spot on (I know this is not MR's quote but it's a response to MR) - the challenge would never have been a red card for any other player IMO - not in a million years - compare it gareth Barry's challenge on the same night and it wasn't even as bad - did Barry get sent off? Cattermole walks onto the pitch on a tightrope with the referee's and is targeted by them. The "Persistent Fouling" rule - well he may as well have already committed 5 fouls before the match starts as that's how referees appear to perceive it. Is this his fault?? It may have been 3 years ago but certainly not now - how badly injured is the player he kicked BTW? Broken leg? Dislocated ankle? Or just a bit of a knock that he got up from shortly after seeing the card brandished? One big thing about challenges like this, and I've said it before, if they are OTT or 2 footed then 99% of the time you will see a small ruckus afterwards where opposing players have a bit of argy bargy (this goes from PL level right down to pub level) None of the Don's players were bothered about the challenge and just wanted to get on with the game - even their players appeared to be surprised by a red card. Let's see the next time Steven Gerrard or Wayne Rooney or one of that ilk commit identical challenge - even with Attwell refereeing they won't get sent off.

    Marcus

A few weeks back we had a bit of a chat about this subject, for me, I highlighted that Sunderland fans would probably be more than happy for Martin O'Neill to replace Cattermole on the assumption that Martin O'Neill is good in the transfer market and would adequately replace him. That was met with hostility from most of you, of course, since you're going to back your current players over some hypothetical future player, although I still stand by my statement.

I was happy to concede that he is a vital part of your strategy given his age, as long as he has bucked his ideas up and continues to put the team first instead of his red-mist. This sending off, and it was a sending off for me, backs up my opinion on him again that he is a liability. He simply can not be trusted, no matter what you say, this is blatant fact, the guy cannot be trusted to put in an honest shift and help his team. He is a hot headed player who consistently puts a foot wrong. If you were playing Chelsea, or United at OT, in a league game and he got sent off like that, you'd have been pulled apart but the quality of the opposition got him off the hook.

I've heard how good he can be, numerous times but he's no Gattusso or Keane so in my opinion, O'Neill has to look to replace the guy. Conspiracy theories aside, he's got nobody to blame but himself.

Fair enough Terry and very valid stuff but I watched Gareth Barry commit a worse foul on the same night and get a yellow card. It was reckless but not dangerous and not over the top of the ball - had he been a fraction of a second quicker (and we are talking fraction) he would;'ve got the ball and the man and everyone would say "Great challenge"!

If O'Neill had replaced him then I would've backed the new player as I would think he would move upwards not sideways or backwards but he didn't and he wants(wanted?) to get Cattermole to sign a new contract. He has been our best player this season (along with Fletcher) so to chastise due to one ruch of blood IMO doesn't make him a liability. It's also his second straight red for us and the other one was for swearing - the other reds he had for us were for 2 yellows. He has NEVER stamped on a player (Bardsley on Mata anyone?) yet he will never get the backing Bardsley does from a large group of our fans.

I rate the lad - he has yet to reach his prime and, IMO, we need the steel in midfield as without him we lack so much. Time will tell mate but I certainly won't get upset about opinions like yours (although I do completely disagrre about the "He Cannot be trusted to put in an honest shift for his team" comment as he has done every game he's played this season up to Tuesday) - it's the idiots that simply slate him for the sake of it that annoy me. Gabbiadini used to regularly get sent off for us for fighting - not for silly yellow cards here and there but physically punching players - I remember him scoring a penalty then planting one on the keeper he scored it past!! Mad!! Catts "stupidity" may well be there and red mist often descends, but watch the same happen with Gerrard or Gareth Barry and see the difference in treatment from the referee.

Cattermole "liability" status may be correct - but this is more down to referee's perception than anything he has done - Even compare him to the unbookable Cabaye or to Tiote up the road - he has to do much less to get booked or sent off than either of them (and Cabaye seems to be able to do anything) - one rulle for Cattermole and one for everyone else IMO

I totally agree Marcus that Cattermole's reputation precedes him, he wouldn't be given the benefit of the doubt in a reckless challenge but that's because he has earned that reputation. Not just playing for you guys but at Wigan and Boro too. The thing I see is, his football on the whole has improved, so he's forced O'Neill to make him an integral part of the team. I have no doubt that if the red mist stopped descending so often he'd be considered a plausible option for a top side, I mean Thomas Gravesen signed for Real Madrid at one point! When there's such a minor difference between winning a trophy and losing it (like us last season with the league) something as small as losing a player for 45 minutes due to a reckless challenge can make all the difference. He's no worse than Keane or Vieira although ability wise they were different from him, but even in such a short period the game has evolved to an extent where every rash tackle is scrutinised so much that the ref's have no choice but to set an example.

I have watched Gerrard, especially in his earlier days, whip out numerous two footers throughout matches, he's a master at them and there's nobody better at them. He's had that part of his game wiped out by red tape nobheads who want to make the sport non-contact and you can see his game has changed for the worse, he's hardly even combative anymore, he's merely a good distributor now. I won't defend Barry, I hate him with a passion, did before his City days, total prat.

'Catts' is the type of player who will get sent off throughout his career, it's not something you can change realistically without taking something away from his game to his detriment. That makes him a liability for me, especially when O'Neill makes it clear he's so pivotal to your structure and your strategy. He'll more than likely be banned for 3-7 games per season and that's no good to lose a captain for that long - last season there was 2 points between yourselves and 10th place, and you were 8 points off finishing above Liverpool. Surely having him in the side would have made a difference to that?
