Just a bit of devils advocate playing here but as we all criticise the ridiculous amounts of money being thrown at Chelski and Citeh and wonder if one day the bubble would burst and they will go bust i pose a question.
If we suddenly found a sugar daddy spending silly money on us for say 10 seasons and during that time we played regular CL football, won the PL, CL, F.A. cup, League Cup, Euro super league cup and world club cup, some of them several times, BUT he then pulled out, we go bust and have to reform a la Wimbledon, Bradford P.A., Newport County etc in low leagues and climb back up again. Would you take it????
Have to say yes personally as i would just love to see us winning stuff for a while and at 51 you start to worry it will never happen. After all if we reformed with our support we should be capable of climbing quicker even than the likes of those i have used as examples, we could well then actually get the chance to own our club a la Barca, and we could have some minor fun along the way winning leagues and cups as we climb back to the top.
    What does everyone else think.

Do we want to win a trophy on massive loans, ie Portsmouth, then owner puls the plug and we don't pay any of the local little companies who really need to be paid for their efforts and products?

    Er no. That's just wrong.

One day a bubble will burst. At the moment, the debt at Man Utd and the ludicrous spending/p&l at both City and Chelsea means that those three teams essentially "must" qualify for the CL every season, or more likely at least not miss out for more than one season.

The problem with that is the sustainable businesses at Arsenal, Tottenham, Everton and maybe even the toon are creeping ever-forwards to threaten the monopoly. We were ever so close last season and Chelsea were just unbelievably fortunate to win the CL. Liverpool will eventually rise again, you would think. The league is more challenging than ever, with not just these emerging teams but also the likes of Stoke, Villa and Fulham able to give the top few a tough match. Even newly promoted sides come up and have a go, it's not as easy as it was. So eventually it stands to reason that someone like Man Utd or Chelsea will falter and that's when it will become very interesting.

Quite agree, it is only a hypothetical question and obviously no one would want others to suffer because of it.

Thats a tough one nevfur but for me personally I think there would be much greater satisfaction doing in the right way than just getting a load of cash and spending it like its going out of fashion. Also there would not be the chances of having people like Downing, Carroll, Henderson, Torres, Shevchenco etc being massive wastes of money. I'd rather have Tiote for 3.5mil then any of the above for the prices paid for them (or probably for 3.5M either)

Think we are doing things the right way and love to see it work but no guarantees which is why i posed the question as obviously we all want to see success and some of us are getting to an age where we wonder if it will ever happen. Was convinced it would happen under Hall and Keegan but we all know how that ended. Agree on the prima donnas point mind.

I think we need to be conservative still.
using the scouting system well will allow us to continue to develop good talent.
We also need to identify who are the 'untouchables' and ensure they have a decent salary... this will help us keep selected players whilst offering an incentive to others to perform well.

Good question...If we had a crystal ball and could see into the future, thus guaranteeing that a) we couldn't win anything in the next 40 years doing it the safe way and b) we could come back up quickly - I'd be very tempted, not just by the winning, but also how much fun the championship was, and how much better it made us as a fanbase (our expectations lowered, we had more respect for other teams and saw what it was to have arrogant Prem team looking down on you) - some people say "I wouldn't to travel to ??? on a rainy wednesday" - well our support does that anyway, but generally has to pay £30-50 for the privilege - who'd have thought we'd all love Plymouth so much?

    Nah.

I'm not a major fan of taking no risks and being too sensible, but I'd rather just build for now, and push for top 4.

We don't need to spend ridiculous amounts to get 4th or maybe even 3rd. Chelsea have spent over a billion, and they aren't always immense.

I'd be happy with if were pushing for 3/4th and we were financially fine, had a quality side, and perhaps made the stadium bigger in the future?
