Terry resigns from international football. What a surprise eh? On the eve of the FA meeting about his charge for racial abuse of Anton Ferdinand. Guilty as charged my lord!

He's got some cheek hasn't he, coming out and saying that the the FA's pursuit after he'd been cleared in court makes his position untenable, I think he'll find it's pretty standard practice and Terry isn't the first and won't be the last player to face a disciplinary hearing despite being cleared by police of a charge. The FA are cocks, I'll give Terry that, but it would be far worse for them to spare Terry this disciplinary hearing after other players have been forced to go through it. Terry on the other hand is a major cock and he never should have been given the captaincy back after he loist it the first time, that was a right farce.

Glad he's gone, epitomises everything wrong with the game atm. Racist, cheating (not nessecarily on the pitch), prick with a giant ego. Sure Chelski will stand by him but personally i'd view that as just as ridiculous as when Liverpool had t-shirts made for Suarez.

Its like handing in your resignation in a job, the day before your boss hands you your cards. Don't give this flannel, that his relationship with the ''FA was untenable'. He called Anton Ferdinand a ''****ing black ****'' and has to be punished for it.

    This.

Logic is obviously not Terry's strong point.

Suarez - not enough evidence to go to court, but it was fine for the FA to charge him and ban him
Terry - enough evidence to go to court, but clearly the FA has it in for him

Still, he's not the first international to try it. Shearer threatened to resign after being charged with kicking Lennon, and didn't Carragher retire in protest at being right back, and then miraculously spring back out of retirement as soon as there was a CB spot available? And IIRC Rio threatened to retire during the drug charge fiasco tho' I may be wrong there.

I actually like his stance here. It highlights the farcical (imo) nature of how the FA have dealt with this and if he feels that the organisation is out to get him in order to justify their agenda driven stance on racism then fair play to him for stepping down.

I understand the different nature of the courts versus the FA's with regards to the level of proof required to be found guilty. But it does seem a little absurd to me that the ultimate court in the land (in this case anyway) can find him not-guilty yet a lesser court can still find him guilty. I am not sure that there is a precedent for this, but what it will do in my opinion (if found guilty) is highlight the need for the FA to either re-organise their procedures so that this does not happen again, or better still, just refer cases of this nature to the courts and let them deal with them, at least that way there would be consistency and not the farce we have had over the last year where one player is charged by them and not by law, their captain is stripped of the captaincy whilst he is still innocent of any wrongdoing and their manager resigns because they interfered with something that they should imo have stayed out of until Terry's guilt or innocence was proven! <ok>

Because they are charging him with two different things. In court he was charged with a racially aggravated public order offence, which implies he was being deliberately and directly racist. The FA is charging him with using offensive language with a reference to race. Two different offences under two different sets of rules.

Because that would just create a farce. Imagine the next time a player gets sent off for punching somebody in the face and insists that the matter must be dealt with in court to ensure "consistency". They then get an expensive legal team, and lots of character witnesses who conveniently happen to play for the same team, create a great story about how the other person wound them up and insulted them, and get away without punishment for violent conduct.

Or imagine Roy Keane wrote in his autobiography about wanting to injure Haaland, then went to court and claimed he was just making stuff up to sell more books. And so got away with a premeditated assault.

Or imagine Rio Ferdinand went to court as it could not be proven beyond reasonable doubt that he wilfully and knowingly missed the drugs test. And so got away with it.

It would be an utter farce.

Terry due to his idiocy and down-right arrogance claims that he's been charged for the same crime twice. This is untrue, and Swarbs you are correct, in court he was charged with a racial abuse public order offence. The FA's charge is bringing the game into disrepute, the same charge as Luis Suarez. The FA's line in this, and they can say that Terry ''probably'' abused Anton Ferdinand and find him guilty, like they did with Luis Suarez. Like Suarez, Terry admitted to doing it.

I was actually talking about cases involving alleged racism, the fall out from the Suarez case has highlighted to me that a more strict burden of proof should be reached before reaching a decision that could possibly severely effect a player's life. There should be consistency, I understand why there was not in this case, but for me it is clear that there is a problem here with regards to letting 3 blokes in a motel decide the fate of somebody when there is in fact a system already in place, a system that does not involve a guess which only has to be 50.1% probably correct and a system that actually requires some sort of evidence to be used in order to ascertain guilt.

As for the difference between the two separate charges, yes I know this is true. And I suppose I was guilty of breaking it down to its simplest terms, i.e. Terry was charged with using racially abusive language towards Ferdinand by one organisation and Terry has been charged with bringing the game into disrepute by using racially abusive language by another organisation...

Don't worry... I'm sure John Terry will whack out his kit and armband... and will run out onto the pitch to celebrate every time England score <ok>

John Terry finds his position 'untenable', and there's talk on here and in the press that he jumped before he was pushed, as he wouldn't have been able to play for England anyway having been found guilty of a charge of racism by the FA. This creates a vacancy, that Rio Ferdinand, who's been found guilty of a charge of racism by the FA against one of his erstwhile England colleagues, has let it be known he's keen to fill.

Am I missing something here?

You're not missing anything. Just because he's keen to fill it doesn't mean he'll get it. The FA hasnlt said they'll offer it to him have they? You might say that you quite fancy getting membership of MENSA - that will never happen but you're still entitled to say it.

There is only one reason that John Terry has quit, he is claiming that he's been charged for the same crime twice. In his opinion, its ''I've been already been found innocent, its time to let the matter drop''. Sorry JT, it doesn't work like that, you are not being charged for the same crime twice. When in court, you were charged on a racially aggravated public order offence, and the punishment for that is a fine and a criminal record.

The FA's charge is bringing the game into disrepute, and you are up on a misconduct charge. The penalty there is a fine and a suspension and the precedent which the FA set i.e. the Luis Suarez case is 8 games. Re: Dongo, its not the same as the charge Rio Ferdinand was up on, as the two crimes are not the same. Rio agreed with someone and didn't make a racist comment, Terry did make a racist comment. Thats why Rio only warranted a fine. Terry has to be hit with an 8 game suspension.

Afraid you're wrong there Oz. Both were charged under rule 3a (the same as Suarez). Both are were charged with referring to the skin colour of their opponent. as was Suarez.

All three charged the same. In Suarez and Ferdinand's cases they were found guilty. In Terry's case, not yet.

Iin summary, and even Swarbs and UIR had to admit defeat on this one in the end, both Suarez and Rio were charged and found guilty of breaking rule 3a, with the addition of using race/skin colour as a reference to their opponent.

Ergo Rio is every bit as "racist" as Suarez is, as is Terry - perhaps.
