Here's one for Swarbs and KPR.

Fergie has attempted to place Utd amongst Europe's elite if they win this season's Champions League, joining AC Milan, Real Madrid, Liverpool, Bayern Munich and Ajax.

The reason he's included Bayern and Ajax in there is because they've both only won it four times.

I was always under the impression the Elite was considered to be the five-times winners, hence them giving those clubs their own trophy to keep. Is this a desperate attempt by Fergie because he knows his chances of getting five are too slim to calibrate, or is he just taking the mick?

It's because he knows he will not be their manager when they eventually win it 5 times, so he's trying to associate his name with the European greats now before his liver shrivels to nothing...

    I don't think he'll quit until he's got the 4th one.

If that's the case, he could be there for a while yet - unless they spend a shed load in the summer. Looks like they've got the Prem tied up this season without really playing exceptional football, but Europe is a different kettle of fish. Barca this year, then who knows for the year after - RM are there or thereabouts again but that could be the maureen factor.

    :)

I hate to break out the fakht gun, but he hasn't said that at all. All he's said is that our European record isn't as good as those five clubs:

"You look at Real Madrid (nine wins and three runners-up spots), AC Milan (7-4), Bayern Munich (4-4), Ajax (4-2) and Liverpool (5-2). We are trying to gain parity with that. We really need to progress quickly to get to that level - and the present group have enough experience in Europe now."

The 'Europe's Elite' reference is just an eager headline writer who's probably realised that "Ferguson says United's European record isn't as good as some other clubs" wouldn't be the most eye catching headline.

It's not the first time he said it either - before the 2009 final he said that winning it four times "would put us alongside some of the great clubs in Europe" but never said it would make us one of the elite.

Swarbs, for a change he's changed tack.Normally when he mentions the most successful sides in Europe he usually fails to mentions Englands most successful European club which is of course Liverpool who have been to 11 European finals having won 8.Man United are way behind having been to 5 having lost 1.Its more than a lot of clubs. But its still way behind Liverpool.
I reckon he deliberately failed to mention Liverpool in 2008.I wonder why that is?
I reckon he really knows that as my signature says,''Liverpool set standards-the rest copy''.

Neither. But probably Barca. At least everyone already knows they are better than us, so it won't be as embarrassing when we lose <ok>

In all seriousness, I'd prefer Barca. They're the more skilled side, but Mourinho is far more tactically astute than Guardiola in big games, as the CdR final showed. Also I think SAF has learnt his lesson from 2009 and won't try to play expansive football against Barca this time. They're still going to dominate the game, but Anderson and Rooney are much better defensively now that they were then, and if we have Fletcher this time we may stand a chance at stifling the midfield and counterattacking whilst their fullbacks are overcommitted. Although that said those tactics may work better against Real, as if we can take Ozil out of the game we can cut off at least 50% of their attacks.

That's the theory anyway. If we get through, then the final is going to be a massively difficult match and we're gonna need some massive performances to get anything. I don't suppose you've got any of that Istanbul spirit left over we could borrow? :)

Well I did like the way he left Liverpool till last in the list of teams with better records than us <ok>

In 2009, he only mentioned Bayern and Ajax, cos he was referring to us potentially getting to four and thus matching those two. Although he still had a cheeky pop:

"If you look at the history, through the 1960s and 1970s, it was done regularly, teams winning it two or three times in a row and cycles of great teams like Bayern, Ajax and Real Madrid."

He quite conveniently missed out Liverpools' back to back in 77 and 78. Although he also missed out Forest, Milan and Inter who did the same, so maybe it wasn't intentional. Either way, there's nothing quite like a bitter old man giving a press conference ;)

Ah well, maybe we can break out the Nou Camp spirit. We've got the new Solksjaer (Hernandez) and Sheringham (Berbatov) and still have the original Giggs in mint condition, so who knows?

It is a difficult choice Barca can be brilliant and RM are starting to show Mourinho's stubborness.

I've got feeling RM may just sneak it.

<laugh> Giggs in mint condition may be pushing it a bit, good condition but not quite mint!

I have to say the Man Utd squad at the moment is the most average I've seen a Man Utd squad to be, and as much as it pains me to say.. Respect to Ferguson for making an average team gel and (surely) win the league and still be in with a chance of winning the Champions league as well. Unfortunately if you want to continue to be challenging for years to come; AF is going to have to spend some of that Ronaldo money...

Nah the Ronaldo money is well gone. Its in Florida paying off creditors on two bankrupt shopping malls. It will be a percentage of the Rooney money Slurgie will be spending in the summer.Well 75% of £20 million is £15 million. He could buy Bobby Zamora and Jimmy Bullard out of that.

    You got the saying wrong.
Its ''You're only as old as the woman you feel,so Giggs is the same age as Imogen Thomas''.
    In that respect,Rooney is 72.

    Well, consider your cockles warmed:

"My expectation has always been high in regards to the European scene, but we do get envious of the records of other clubs in Europe. We look at other teams' records and we are trying to get parity with that. We look at clubs like Real Madrid, Milan, Ajax, Bayern Munich and Liverpool and we really need to progress quickly to get to that level."

    That was his full quote.

Really? You don't remember our squad in 04/05 and 05/06? Silvestre played 40+ games in both of those seasons, and I think we were worse in possibly every area of the pitch. This squad needs some work, but I'd take it over that one in an instant! Particularly given how well many of our younger squad members have come on this season.
