Now that the fixture is out of the way I feel it is safe to comment on the percieved wisdom of Alex Ferguson this week when he said that the obscene chanting between and about Liverpool and MU supporters must end. Apart from a very minor incident at the match this was observed by both sets of supporters which is to their credit. What I cannot fathom though, is why this was not addressed sooner since the hatred between the two clubs has been well entrenched over decades. The bad blood between the two clubs could have been cleared much sooner so SAF coming out with it now seems more than sanctimonious or unecessary. I hope their hatred can now be buried and the future sees better relationships between them but somehow I doubt it will not last. This is purely commenting on the power that a manager can exercise over club supporters - if he chooses too - and their reaction to his plea so please, no Hillsboro/Munich comments on the thread. I was around for both of them, and have also heard the songs and chants pertaining to them many times at OT and Anfield.
I think Fergie did have something to do with it, but it has also been highlighted in the media for the last couple of weeks, the whole nation has been talking about, so Fergie can take some of the credit, but its not all down to him.
Realise that there has been massive publicity about the outcome of the independent inquiry but as I say it wasn't all about that. The chanting has gone on for years and could/should have been sorted sooner to nip the hatred in the bud. SAF has been at MUFC long enough whilst lLiverpool has changed managers regularly. Last season was down to him and Dalglish as well as the fans.
