Any list of potential relegation candidates has to have us in there. Whether your a pessimist or an optimist realistically we are in the mix and will be for probably the whole season as I don't think the bottom half of the table will be separated by many points.

16th no question whatsoever. And you may have meant 17th as that's the last position before the relegation zone.

He probably chose 16th because it's where we are now.

If we beat Fulham then we are more than likely going to end the season safely. It will prove we are good enough. Getting something from Everton will be very difficult they are on fire

At least no one's choosing West Brom - there were plenty of posters on here inexplicably having us down as less likely than West Brom to go down before the season started. Anyone who watches football even semi-casually can see that West Brom are on an upward trajectory, and have been for a while. Class team imo, with that rare mix of a nice playing style, guts and never-say-die attitude, a number of very decent players, and now a decent run of top flight experience. Much like Saints were for much of the time in our last period in the top flight (and hopefully are shaping up nicely to be this time - other than the experience we lack at this level, it's the guts and winning attitude I'm holding the jury out for, being only five games in, but promisingly having shown this in three of those five games so far).

Just had a look at a general post by Ian Thumwood aimed at all prem fans, seemed a bit gloomy had us as certs for relegation (this was pre-villa match). Basicly its an article about the gulf between the championship and the premiership and how the dream that was the premier league is now just a place to get relegated from for newly promoted teams. Its is worth considering the still great possibility of relegation, even if saturday was a pretty good game. Three teams have to go down at the end of the day, and who knows what changes could be made in January or which poor managers could be replaced by good ones (or good by bad in some cases). Confidence does work wonders but I think a bit of healthy cynicism doesn't always hurt either, the bigger they stand the harder they fall. I really do think people are underestimating the clubs ambition, money, stability, facilities and what cortese will do for success, but still all the other clubs want success too. Yes enjoy saturdays result but don't get too carried away, take each game as it comes.

Ian Thumwood always has a hint of negativity in his posts. He maybe right about Saints, but the Premier League the place for newly promoted teams to get relegated from? I'll just hop back 5 months ... QPR, Swansea, Norwich.

If we beat Fulham we will have 6 points from our last two home games, that's all. I can't see how that is an indication of us staying up.

Dunno why anyone bothers to get promoted - clearly no promoted club has any business being in the premier league because they are just going to get relegated the following year.

As someone else has said...give it a few games and if we are back on track winning games, people like you will be full of doom and gloom here saying Adkins is going to be poached by one of the "better clubs". :headbang:

Not sure that Alan Green will say anything worth listening to about Saints Tom- imo the guy is an over-opinionated big-head who forgets that he is only a radio commentator. I met this chap quite a few years ago at a do and his massive ego and self-importance was so evident it was sickening - he got really angry with somebody i know who is also a sports reporter because he dared to question his opinion on Saints after Green was running us down, and we had thrashed Liverpool 4-1 at the Dell only a few weeks previously ! I have never liked the sound of his voice since that night - and i am generally a very forgiving person !!

I'm not a doom and gloom merchant, I honestly believe you can't truly predict who will finish where until the end of the season. You can make educated guesses but at the end of the day a guess is still a guess and even if you are a Mayan astronomer or Nostradamus there is still a chance a team favoured to go down may avoid that eventuality. But the reverse is true, good things happen and bad things, just gotta take it as it comes, whats good for us is probably bad for some other teams and vice-versa.

Also I did point out to Ian the likes of Norwich, Stoke, Wigan, QPR etc. and when you look at the league table there are very few teams who haven't flirted with relegation on occasion, even the league champions were in league one not so long ago. So no-one is ever truly safe really, I think even United were relegated back in the 70's (same year as us I believe), but i'm still optimistic about our clubs future considering all the resources we have at our disposal. One really positive thing to make note of is that since Liebherr and Cortese came along we have only sold one of our big players we would rather have kept hold of, i.e. The Ox, few teams can boast such success with holding on to players. Even Arsenal seems to be turning into a feeder club for Barcelona :).

Ok, my bump today is from this post 5 years ago this week.

To paint the scene we had a really difficult start to the season playing man city, man utd, arsenal all lost and in between lost at home to Wigan. We lost our first 4 games, including a 6-1 drubbing at arsenal. We hadn't long completed the transfer of our big summer signing, Ramirez.

We had just picked up our first win, 4-1 against villa and up to 16th. We seemed happy to finish at that position. Adkins was still in charge and we had the red kit with the pinstripes.

We finished our first season back in 14th and 41pts.

Post 29 made me smile, some things don't change, sorry Ian

Ramirez best game for us by a country mile. Also notable for Mayuka winning a penalty for our fourth goal.

I had a laugh at the Ian comments too <laugh>

@pass the football was a divisive but good poster if I recall correctly. Can't remember why he left.

Funny seeing the mentions of gomarchingin too... Think he got banned.
