It's not irrelevant, that's the point I was making.

We're not talking about whether the ref saw it or not - both incidents were very similar in that both players knocked the ball past their defenders, and went for contact, then hit the deck.

He was looking for the penalty, as was Broadfoot.

Both were 50/50 pens, some you get, some you don't.

 

do you get a penalty for obstruction these days ?

Anywhere else on the field it's a free kick. It should be an indirect free kick in the penalty box.

What chance have we got when the refs don't know the rules....
