Our hypothetical 23 man Pompey squad of the 21st Century is almost complete.

    So far we have elected:

GK: Jamie Ashdown, Shaka Hislop, David James

DEF: Sol Campbell, Arjan de Zeeuw, Sylvan Distin, Glen Johnson, Younes Kaboul, Linvoy Primus, Dejan Stefanivic

MID: Patrik Berger, Pedro Mendes, Paul Merson, Jamie O'Hara, Gary O'Neil, Robert Prosinecki, Matt Taylor
    + A-N-OTHER
    (VOTE HERE) http://www.not606.com/showthread.php/42640-Building-a-21st-Century-Squad-MIDFIELD-VOTE

Now it is time to nominate FIVE strikers that have played for Pompey since 2000.

This is a very difficult one.

Up to now I have listed a "must pick" list and a "could pick" list, from which I complete the number of nominations.

Here though, I compiled my "must pick" list and suddenly realised I have NINE names on it! Benjani, Peter Crouch, Jermaine Defoe, Kanu, Lomana LuaLua, Teddy Sherringham, Svetoslav Todorov, (Corporal Punishment) Guy Whittingham and Yakubu. Hell - I have to leave four of these out!

After tearing most of my hair out I have whittled it down to my five nominations:

    (in alphabetical order)

    Peter Crouch
    Jermaine Defoe
    Lomana LuaLua
    Svetoslav Todorov
    Guy Whittingham

Yakubu, Todorov, Crouch, Kanu and though I can't stand the dwarf I've got to pick Defoe.

Dev are you thinking of starting a Pre-2000 squad after this?

I've quite enjoyed this, so maybe I'll do a 1990s one in the near future <ok>

    Sheringham Kanu Defoe Todorov Benjani

I suspect when you add up their collective age my list would easily top 150.

He played his last game for us in 1996! - Look out for him if I do a 1990s squad though <ok>

I'm aware that some people only post at work and may have had a long week-end, so I will leave this open until some-time this afternoon (tomorrow morning if I'm too busy to check it out<yikes>)

If we are basing this on heart and committment, how the hell can defoe be mentioned. Yeah he was good (maybe too good), but his heart was NEVER with pompey, so I refuse to pick him. The 5 have to be: Kanu, Benjani, Sheringham, Todorov and Whittingham.

    Nuff said

Out of all of us who have voted up to now, I'm surprised no-one has mentioned Mr Nugent. I don't think he'd stand a chance of getting into the final five because the competition is so high, but he has come on leaps and bounds since droopy left and he has certainly shown himself to be worthy of wearing the Pompey shirt this season.

Toddy, Corporal Punishment are King Kanu are easy picks for 'legendary' reason as much as their proliferation as much as skill. The other two not so easy - Crouch was too inconsistent for me, Defoe was a great striker but a complete ****hole, Lua Lua gifted but frustrating, Benji had half a fruitful season and the rest was a desert, and Yakubu was incredibly gifted but lazy. In the end, I'll go for the Yak, because of his great partnership with Toddy and Defoe because he is a natural goalscorer.

Blimey, Devo - 1996 !! I must have got confused by seeing Guy Whittingham's name mentioned - You think of Corporal Guy, and Walshy's name immediately springs to mind ! What a brilliant combination they were together.

Can I cast my vote now for Walsh for your 1990's squad ? Please ?! :emoticon-0120-doh:

How can Whittingham be in the Pompey 2000s squad? he played one game in the 2000-2001 season before being loaned out to Peterborough, oxford and wycombe, then he left. Of course he will be in the 1990's squad but i don't think he can count in the 2000s squad!

That was my exact reason for not picking him.

Kanu and Benjani have to be in there, as much as i hate to say it Defoe couldn't be left out. The last two places are harder to choose, I suppose it would have to be Crouchy and the Yak.

Nominations counted and there's no need for a vote as we have five winners

    With 9 nominations KANU
    With 7 nominations TODDY
With 6 nominations CROUCH, DEFOE and THE YAK
