Gerrard is living off reputation last really seen three years ago. statistically Liverpool have played better without him for years. Other players step up when he doesn't play also he demands/receives the ball too much when he plays. He is liable for long balls and no longer has the ability to change matches as he used too. This was his main strength but he can't do it anymore. If he can learn to play deeper, and I don't think he can, then he has the potential to play for a few more years. There are younger, hungrier players at the club who as said before raise their game when he doesn't play. From his performances for the last few years he is more valuable as a commercial asset than a playing one. Yes he has played a deeper role for England, but he has not been great. People gloss over his faults and mistakes because of the player he used to be. As such I hope shelves isn't the new Gerrard, hope he continues developing as he has been and he will be a far better team player than Gerrard ever was.
We should try sticking Gerrard up front. He knows where the onion bag is and can link with others, got to be a better shout considering our options.
No one should be signed as 'the new Gerrard'. Over the years we always struggled when Gerrard was out. We had no cover. So lets sign this guy and have Shelvey.
