Like I said to Bob, name me a goal he's scored with a good shot?

I can show you goals Aaron McLean has scored with really good shots and we all accept that he's not good enough to be 1st team for what we want to achieve.

Like I said to Bob and Chazz, it's piss easy to keep denying it let's get down to the facts: how many goals can you remind me of (or even near misses where he's done well) when the shot was good? (in the corner, powerful, decent bend, anything) I'll be able to give you far more examples of crap shooting from him.

What are you talking about Chazz. Goal scoring is all about how cleanly you connect with the ball. Nothing else matters. FACT <whistle>

So if he has 5 one-on-ones in a game, misses 4 and scores 1 and we lose 2-1 to a more clinical team is that OK from his point of view? His 16 goals got us nowhere last season because he was missing left, right and centre when it mattered. When we lost to Blackpool, he costs us a **** load of chances. When we lost to Leeds he, McLean and Adebola all missed a few good chances. At Barnsley he missed a load and eventually scored at 2-0 down when it was too late, yeah real helpful that Matty (by the way, that was about the best goal he's scored for us, that one actually was near the corner) Home to West Ham everyone went on about Rob Green but who did he keep saving from? Oh yeah good old Matty again. He missed big chances at Boro, Burnley, massive ones at home to Donny and Brighton, and against Bristol City he eventually scored from his 5th one-on-one after missing 4. That isn't composure.

I'm just gonna stop there for now, that's plenty but until someone can point out any decent goals he's scored I don't need any more ammo.

The question was whether he can finish, if he scores with his cock hair it doesn't prove good finishing does it? That's my point. Numbers don't show everything. Koren scored 6 less goals than him but each one was a proper goal: deliberate, in the corners and powerful. Not goalkeeping errors or scuffed shots next to the keepers legs.

Can't be arsed, we've had this discussion before, it never goes anywhere, I've resigned myself to the fact that you simply don't know your arse from your elbow. <laugh>

Did we really vote him in as a mod!!!

I've explained it to you enough times now. The goal scorer who has 4 chance and gets four goals does not exist. Andy Cole used to get 8 or 9 chances a game for Man U, used to score one sometimes, 2 or 3 others, sometimes none. Fergie played him cos he would score more than anyone else statistically.

Same with Fryatt over Mclean/Adebola. FACT.

With Jay Simpson like this my moneys on Simmo over Fryatt.

Fryatt does miss chances but so does every striker. I don't think he is a premier league standard striker but he is very competent at this level and I am looking forward to Matty challenging for a starting place in the near future

But the thing is, Fryatt was the one in 8 or 9 player at best last season. The rest of the time we were drawing 0-0 at home to Donny despite having 20 shots on goal, because he missed most of them including 3 one-one-ones. If Fryatt was the player everyone on here thinks he'd have won us loads of games like that one last season. Instead, he let us down more often than not.

I agree with that, he's competent at this level and him coming back is a good thing, he's better than McLean overall. But he isn't a patch on Simpson and he isn't a reliable player in front of goal, not a chance.

We've had it several times before, and every time it's been like this; I give valid points and examples and everyone takes the piss because you can't say anything about Fryatt and no amount of reasoning will change that, because he's Fryatt so he must be good.

So you agree he is a competent championship striker but he isn't a reliable championship striker?

Obviously westhull. If he could kick a ball cleanly he'd be competent and reliable

Just to name one or two his goal away at forest in his first season here, that goal away at Ipswich, don't know what your on about with that Barnsley game his third was goal of the season by a mile and a lovely finish, not a crappy lucky goal by a long way. You really do talk some **** sometimes.

Hes a decent all round player but he isnt clinical. Hes very similar to McLean.

That goal at Ipswich was a good goal because he made it all himself but the finish was complete luck, right down the middle and the keeper ****ed up. 3rd goal against Barnsley was very similar - great goal cos of the build up but the shot - even though from my seat it looked good at the time - was again right down the middle when I saw the replay. Forest I don't remember quite as well, but I'm pretty sure it was another scuff down the middle.

You said he hits the corners, and your examples are where he hit it down the middle, yet I talk some ****.

This is exactly what I mean, no one can back up this idea hes so accurate yet its OK to get all pissy at me for saying the opposite but in a reasoned way with examples.

You don't rate Fryatt, we get it, but you're in the minority.

You claimed Mclean was a better finisher last season, which is rather liking saying Simon Walton is a better midfielder than Yaya Toure.

His goal against Blackpool away was put accurately in the corner aswell, and those goals straight down the middle? They were well out the keepers reach. So not only does a good striker have to score by hitting the ball cleanly with power, the ball also has to hit the corner of the net every time regardless of his or the keepers position, for him to be considered a good striker?

Half of Simpsons league goals have gone into the middle of the net, the one against Brighton remember, as have both of alukos, so they must be crap too <ok>

And I didn't claim it based on reputations, I said it because at the time, McLean had just scored a really good goal against Forest. I was going to link to it to prove that even McLean (who we all agree isn't good enough) can shoot at least some of the time. I still think McLean's probably a better finisher but its close, they're both **** in front of goal.

His goal against Blackpool was a tap-in with his toe from about 3 yards, and even then it was hardly in the corner. It wasn't a problem because from there it doesn't matter how you hit it, but you can't say that's proof that he's a good finisher, because he scored from inside the 6 yard box with the keeper on his line. I specifically stated in an earlier post that I would accept one that was accurately in the corner OR one that was powerful enough to beat the keeper, basically anything thats a decent shot. I didn't say it had to be both, but that would be nice.

Simpson, like Fryatt's at Blackpool was a tap-in, he didn't need to beat the keeper he was already on the floor, so hitting the middle of the goal is ideal in that situation. Don't be so stupid. I agree that Aluko's goal against Millwall was a bit lucky, but the power seemed to take it through the keeper. It won't happen every time so he will need to do better than that, you're right. It doesn't mean he's a crap shooter, because that was just one shot and he is yet to show whether he'll be good in front of goal or not overall, personally I reckon he'll be good based on his goals for Rangers, but we don't know. With Fryatt, those ones down the middle are the best we've seen from him. His worst was far, far worse. The embarrassing series of misses in key games like Doncaster and Brighton when we drew 0-0 for example, also West Ham and and the other games I've mentioned. 14 shots to 2 against West Ham, we missed 14 and they scored 2. They were a promotion team and that is what we aspire to be, if we want to be like them we need to stick with the quality players and proper finishers. We can't afford to be as utterly ****e in front of goal as we were last season.

Fryatt's goal at Leicester last year, even though we lost, was from a tight angle and was a great finish. He can scuff it and it still goes in, surely that's a mark of how good he is? If he was scuffing them wide all the time, then fair enough, he'd rightly be called a waste of space. He doesn't always score when he has a chance, but show me a striker who's shots go in EVERY time and I shall show you a unicorn that ****s ice cream.

I can't wait to see him back in the side.

did you see Jermain Defoe's first against Reading on Sunday? He deliberately hit it half-ball which made it appear like a scuff, but he knew exactly what he was doing.

    It's technique.

Just what I was thinking. I'm looking forward to Fryatt returning. For a start I find it bad news that he's out. (He got 17 goals for us last season playing in a team that was not best suited to him).

His chances of bagging regularly in our current formation/style are much great imo.

Brucie will only play him if he delivers. Look as Proschy..... not doing it so he's Mr Splinter Bum for the time being.

Of course if Matty doesn't respond well enough to his treatment we won't see him this season :(
