I knew he scored, i don't know it was one of his wonder goals. he always used to score on debuts - got just the 3 for us IIRc including another special - a scissors kick v blackpool - but still it was only blackpool so does that count have you any links to this chelsea debut goal TF - i guess there's no footage, but any written links - photos?

It was his debut game against Blackpool that I was referring to. The goal I remember was a spectacular overhead kick. I was just a kid, but from memory we win 3-1 and Greaves scored a hat trick on debut.

HI Boss - I'm not that keen But thanks for the site - duly bookmarked A quick glance at it shows JG's record of being the first to 100 league goals but doesn't mention the far greater achievement of being the all-time top goalscorer in in England's top division going back to Shearer, who is often praised for his premier record, Jimmy not only scored 97 more than Alan, but took less games to do it Greaves' strike rate (if my maths is correct) was .69 per game, Shearer's .51 per game
Sherarer's stats include a higher percentage of penalties, though - in a few seasons at Newcastle, the majority of his goals were from the penalty spot instead of open play.
It's true Graves' goals came in a different era, so did Bobby Charlton's but people still talk about him as England's top goalscorer at international level The fact is Greaves is the all-time top scorer in the top diivision there were plenty of players who came before him who didn't score more, including Dixie Dean, Nat Lofthouse Tommy Lawton etc plenty of people around at the same time like Dennis Law, Roger Hunt and Geoff Hurst, plenty of people who came after him like Trevor Francis Gary Lineker etc But Greaves outscored them all, and while Shearer's inferior record is often mentioned, the daddy of them all Greaves' record is barely mentioned. It's not even on his own website, AFAIC so i tend to see it as one of my missions in life to keep putting that fact out into cyberspace, one day the BBC at least might wake up to it - the Prem-obssessed Sky I have little hope for they will continue to trumpet Shearer's achievement and neglect Greaves' superior one.
I don't think that's Necessarily a valid point. I remember seeing many goalless games back then. I suppose that if you never saw him play, you wouldn't appreciate just how good he was. Everybody moans about Defoe's conversion rate. Greaves' was spectacular. He very rarely missed - always seemed so cool. You wouldn't know he was on the pitch sometimes, then he would pop up in the penalty area, usually, and bang it was in the back of the net.

Cheers TF, so the info came from his book, can you give us the description of the goal if there is one greaves was faster and better than defoe in practically every apsect, but JD's second goal against Reading was worthy of Greaves at his best as he scored it i just thought straight away - the spirit of Greavesie is here today - well maybe i wasn't being so poetic at the time, but that was in my mind
I think Jimmy discribes in his book,i'll have to have a look tonight when i get home,but basicly,he weaves around and through 5 players then slips it under the keeper as he comes out,a fortaste of the wonder goals he scored for us.
Oh, come on! Please do not sully the good name of one of our greatest legends by comparing him to Defoe!

I'm not happy with this comment HIAG - if you want to stand by it fine I'll repeat Defoe's second at Reading was worthy of Greaves at his finest- i watched Greaves all through the 60s did you? if you still maintain i'm sullying Greaves' reputation, fine that's your opinion - it's 100% not mine Greaves was my idol at the time BTW
