Off work today and channel hopping ended up watching only fools and horse. Classic comedy that doesn't seem to age! Got me thinking about other favourite old TV shows.

What TV programmes do people wish were still on?

Father Ted and, more recently, IT Crowd. Can't believe we're not getting another series.

On the brighter side, Red Dwarf is back next month.

Didn't know that was coming back Joe. Took me a while to get into it but classic stuff. Father Ted was the same took a while to acquire a taste for it!

I do wish some classic original Star Treks were still transmitted. I would also have liked the Star Trek Enterprise series to have been broadcast by Auntie instead of CH4, who buggered it with endless adverts. I'd also like to see some of the old drama series such as Colditz and Secret Army [spoofed by the comedy series Allo! Allo!], Onedin Line, Poldark, etc... They were superb stories, told well. Unfortunately, they were in an era of great TV story telling and so one got used to decent quality and took them for granted. You couldn't make them nowadays because the stories move too slowly for modern audiences, weaned on crash, bang and wallop. Also, the originals are completely the wrong format, being 4:3 in a 16:9 era, and mixed film and early videotape. We're always being told TV audiences won't put up with the vagaries of such ancient TV technologies. I'm inclined to believe the experts on this, though personally I'd have no problem.

I'd like to see another series or two of the Italian detective Aurelio ZEN. We only got 3 feature length stories, which were absolutely brilliant. They were very expensive to make though, but a huge success worldwide, so the Beeb made a profit in the end. It was cancelled by the new fat controller, so what do I know..? 7 million others thought it was great too, though..!

Funnily enough, I am reading the second of two Colditz books lent to me, both written by Pat Reid. The first one was about his exploits until he got a Home Run, as they said back then, and the second is obviously about the exploits of the many who stayed behind. I must admit, almost every page finds me admiring their discipline, determination and guile.

Once piece of trivia is the German extracts that are occasionally written into the text, with no explanation, with my German being completely forgotten from school. Google Translate becomes extremely useful at these times, with near perfect results. :)
