My wife is Brazilian (and thus speaks Portuguese) and she assures me it's pronounced Meer-ell-ess. Do all the commentators think they're being clever or something? Mind you I suppose the vast majority of them haven't settled on how to pronounce "Kuyt" yet either lol...

I don't think J's are pronounced with an H in portugese. I think it depends on the name as well. Juan is more like "shoe-on" something like that. same with Josue it is more like "joe-sway". Joao Mountinho the A has that "ow" sound to it and is pronounced more like " chow" or an italiano ciao or portugese goodbye tchau.

I would go with what the Brazilian lady says. Besides, regardless of language some people want their surname pronounced a certain way regardless of how it reads. To pronounce names properly in a foreign language one must understand the alphabet of that language, I have heard more that two different and wrong pronounciations of Hyypia with some commentators throwing in an R somewhere? But, if you never heard the correct way to say the name how would you read it, not knowing how finnish letters sound, like hiipia possibly or Heepia. I have been saying Mer el es but maybe there is slightly more emphasis on the S at the end, sounding slightly longer ess than in english.

Hi Everyone As a Liverpool supporter and a Portuguese student, I can clear this matter up once and for all (hopefully without sounding as up myself as i did just there). The correct pronunciation of Meireles in EUROPEAN Portuguese (which is what pertains here) is MAY-RUH-LESH. The nice brazilian lady is giving you the correct pronunciation for Brazilian Portuguese, which is somewhat different from European Portuguese. Hope that clears it up.
