Should Everton have had two penalties awarded at Old Toilet?

For me two blatant penalties from Evans & Plug both too slow and on the wrong side of the opposition player and pulled down their opponent. Another bought referee? or just a victim of the pressure heaped on officials over the last 20 years?

"35 min: Evans and Beckford tangle in the left-hand corner of the United area, near the dead-ball line. Beckford stumbles over, Evans putting his right knee up to ensure the Everton player doesn't somehow squirm past. Evans then falls on top of him. That looked nothing more than a pair of alcoholics attempting the pasodoble, but Beckford's claiming for a penalty. You could make a case for it, I suppose, as Evans did deliberately look to check him"

"57 min: Anichebe skins Ferdinand down the left and powers into the box. He loses control as he's about to shoot, then is shoved over by the left arm of the defender. We've all seen penalties given for that."

"56 min Anichebe skips past Ferdinand on the outside and forces his way into a shooting position from the left of the box. He goes down as Ferdinand desperately tried to get back on terms but there's no whistle. Definite contact from Ferdinand, and he didn't come close to the ball"

Excerpts from the Guardian on Sunday & Telegraph.

Blatant penalty from Evans?!? You've got to be kidding me. That was a tangle of legs, and Evans got plenty of the ball before the two players went down. I haven't seen a single comment that it was anything more that a hopeful shout by Beckford who was dragging Evans down on top of him.

"Come on mate, that's just silly. The Beckford/Evans situation certainly wasn't a penalty. United deserved the win, they outplayed us." and that's from an Everton fan.

The Ferdinand one could well have been given, but then experienced defenders get away with similar in the PL all the time, particularly when they know the ref can't see it. Or did you forget our match in November 2009? From the Times, Mail and BBC:

"Had the match ended goalless, Martin Atkinson, the referee, would have ended up with a stern rebuke from Ferguson for refusing to award United a penalty in the fourteenth minute, when Antonio Valencia tumbled after appearing to be impeded by Terry."

"John Terry's a lucky boy - the Chelsea captain grabs a big handful of Valencia's shirt and drags him down in the box but the angle was such that neither official could have seen that. If they had it was a definite penalty."

"Terry escaped punishment for an apparent tug on Valencia's shirt in the box."

So yeah, could have been given, but defenders get away with that more often than not. And even Moyes had no problem with it not being given, and though that Anichebe had slightly overrun the ball.

But you just keep your tin hat tight on that bitter head mate. I'm sure United have bought all the referees and had they not Chelsea would have won every major trophy for the last six years <ok>

Why do you plastics have to try to justify the apparent lack of pace and guile in the centre of your defence with incidents from other matches which bare no meaning to the question in hand? Answer the bloody question without the hard done by monologue.

I was just relaying what I read in two class newspapers and thought I'd ask the question and that in your view makes me bitter? but how could I have know the leader of the plastic brigade would jump in with the usual manure rhetoric <doh>

I answered the question - the Evans / Beckford incident was never a penalty. The Ferdinand one could well have been, but then defenders get away with those all the time. The Terry example was just the first example that came to mind of a sneaky foul in the box that the officials weren't able to pick up on - Vidic and Ferdinand have done the same thing in the past. And regardless of what your view of the incident is, calling it a blatant penalty just smacks of yet more bitterness from Mr "you didn't deserve the win"...

And how ironic is it that you should accuse me of the usual rhetoric? You're the one wheeling out the tired old "bought the referee / pressure on the officials" cliche after a dominant performance and well deserved United win. Even the Everton fans and manager admit we deserved the victory yesterday.

Yeah a dominant performance apart from the goal that Hernandes scored from a defensive error (unforced)and had one real chance at goal which Hernandes defended really well<laugh> Other than that you were ordinary at best and didn't really cause Everton any real grief whatsoever.<ok>

Yeah, you're right. 61% possession, 21 shots on goal, six or seven top drawer saves by Howard and about 65% of the game played in Everton's half. And that was with half of our first team rested. It was a really well balanced contest <ok>

You should really lay off the lemons mate. Watch last season's double DVD again...it'll make you feel a whole lot better <laugh>

He was a damn sight more stretched than VDS was across two legs against your lot :) And which did you think was the one that stretched him? Hernandez' shot, his header or Rooney's freekick?

And I'm glad I'm destressing you. You must have been ****ting yourself when Robbie Keane had that sitter against you on Sat. If only Liverpool hadn't ruined him he'd have tucked that one away and ended your season early <ok>

Distressing? <laugh> your the one on the Chelsea board mate, i'm loving the attention. If it didn't bite you wouldn't be here :)
But anxious at Pikey boy missing? nah... West Ham getting one goal was never going to upset our momentum. Whereas VDS had to pull off the save of the game from Victor Anichebe. who incidentally should have been awarded a penalty after Plug again was too slow and the wrong side of his opponent. Everton justifiably could have won or at least drawn but became an old toilet refereeing statistic.
