while Harry might have got us to 4th one season,he still said we were punching above our weight this season we were 3rd then he took his eye off the ball because he thought England would come calling.i think that was unaccetable to Levy,i know it was to me,that's why imo AVB was hired, because Levy thinks he can keep us at the level we are,and eventually improve,it is not an instant thing, but hopefully it will come, that's why 5th is acceptable to me this season, with maybe a cup win.4th would be great, but maybe a season to early

Like me, Mr Bale doesn't appear too interested in transition year rubbish, the last team that tried that after dabbling with 4th place was Villa! <yikes>....transition??? the PL waits for no-one to get their **** together. His comment re. CL next year is to be playing in it, not trying to qualify for it....again!

Interesting bit at the end on Benny's injury which I will tag onto the BAE thread.

    Very, very true.

The Premier League is the most unforgiving league around. You can play brilliant one game and one tiny mistake can usually mean the difference between 3, 1 or 0 points.

    I agree.

It's worth noting that in Arsenal's 'transition' season they managed 3rd. Why would we accept less than 4th as a success? This 'lowly' Spurs mentality is not good.

Can see why you are a mod Spurf - a very succinct post - and one I agree with.

HIAG - have you thought that maybe Levy lost such confidence in Harry and our performance in calendar 2012 that he feared we would finish well down on last year - what was it 3 league wins in 15 or something like that? If that is the case then bringing in a new man to stop an expected slide may have been the solution - is that bad management and administration - or good foresight and planning?

I don't think it's about having low expectations I think it is about wanting AVB to be a success. The media are straining at the bit to tell the story of how AVB fails again and along with that how Spurs threw away their chance of success when they parted company with Harry.

This is not the story that any Spurs fan should want to read so some of us are, I think, trying to deflect the AVB criticism in order to give the guy the best chance of success. If we could all suspend our judgement and just get behind him and the team the media could not ignore strong support from Spurs fans. Some of the players are sounding happy and confident with AVB so the thinking is let's work on that and shut the negative vibes out.

The story I want to read is how AVB came to Spurs and became the manager we had been looking for, for years.

The media can go f*ck 'emselves. It's because of their bullsh*t I rarely read the papers these days. Hopefully AVB and the players ignore the crap they release and we just focus on what we do best - play well and strive to win.

We'd win the league and the papers etc would still find negatives. One thing I beg of fellow Spurs fans is to never allow their judgement be influenced by the media. They're a bunch of w*nkers who only ever want to see the bad side of things to create a story.

    Rant over <laugh>

SoS - I am sure your opinions of the media are spot on but unfortunately like it or not they are powerful and can make or break people - enough hounding and AVB's job becomes impossible.

Lockstock - which year was Ars*n*l's transition then? You cannot surely be thinking of the arrival of W*ng*r as his predecessor was Bruce Rioch of all people - not difficult to better him

Spurf, I am not impressed with any teams start to this season really, for example The Saints have been here 5 minutes and did something we haven't for decades, took the lead twice against United! Reading took the lead at Chelsea after going behind! we are not the only team to have had a shake up, lose their best player etc. etc. I don't think their mantra is to write off a season for transition, they will expect to maintain their position. The goons have lost their best player 2 seasons running yet maintain their league position. Transition?, laying an excuse early for failure is pretty grim imo.

I'd say success for Spurs is anywhere around 5th-6th (at worst) and pushing close to 4th with a good FA Cup and EL run, possibly a semi/final appearance in one or both. Anything better is overachievement, anything worse is underachievement. With the talented squad you have you are capable of at least 6th and solid cup runs.

5th and 6th is not a successful position for us.

3rd/4th is what we need to be aiming for. Anything lower and it's a failure.

Content? NO! Acceptable? Yes, for this season.

Like it or not this IS transition. New manager, new players, new tactics. The ball is still round I'll grant you that.

DL getting carried away with his league position.

When did early pacemakers ever win anything?
