I think in this day and age, the cost of these kinds of war the US are involved in, can't be made profitable.

Just no. Syria is a civil war, not an oppressive government committing genocide. There was always a violent element to the protests from the start. The western reporting of it is scandalous with many of the so called "regime massacres" being actually done by the "rebels".
America were dying to get in there in the same style as their Libyan humanitarian no fly zone cum active arial assistance for the rebels. Russia and China learned the lessons of Libya and stopped it happening.
Israel know they cannot attack Iran with Syrian anti-aircraft stations between them and Iran so this is a proxy way of getting them out of the way with Saudi Arabia all to willing to get one over on their Shiite adversaries.
Assad was expected to have fallen by now but hasn't so you can hear increasingly desperate rhetoric from Hague, Clinton et al about tangible help for the rebels.

If you want to talk about picking fights why aren't Yemen and Bahrain getting the same grief off western governments for their "oppressive" reaction to peaceful protests

How can the US really gain permanent presence in the Middle East? Sure they have Israel and the propped up kingdoms, give them avenues on the ground, but surely, as stated above, in the end, the locals win out. Can they gain enough friendly states to hold strength, or will the more aggressive states hold sway?

In fact, the British government supplied the Bahraini police with weaponry and training to deal with the uprising.

Are the Brits silent American brothers in arms? Are they reading from the same battle plan?

There's a deeper more profound meaning in that statement.

Ask yourselves this question. Who would you rather have as the world's dominant power,

    a) a bunch of cave dwelling medeavelists who believe women should be kept out of sight, gays should be thrown off cliffs, and anyone who insults allah is condemned to death,
    or
    b) an inscrutable dictatorship which treats its entire population as a slave army,
    or
    c) a flawed but well established democracy with a written constitution that enshrines the rights of man, and that furthermore invented rock n roll?

The correct answer is, "God Bless America".

Bullshit. What dictator is looking to rule the world, what "cave dwellers" are looking to rule the world? They basically just don't like people meddling in their affairs. 200 years the west have been dancing this same dance with Afghanistan and still haven't learnt.
Your pansy rhetoric about america is absolute bull. As corrupt as any other country, constitution no longer worth a ****e if you look at Guantanamo, the patriot act, Bradley Manning. If America was just another tinpot dictatorship the list of people from the country brought up for war crimes would make the Nuremburg Trials look like a civil case.

According to the New America Foundation, American arms and training played a role in 20 of the 27 armed conflicts in 2007, which earned them $27bn dollars in receipts. In 2006, when the UN proposed a resolution applying regulation to the arms trade, the US were the only country in the world to vote against it. The resolution resurfaced in 2008, with the US being joined solely by Zimbabwe in voting against.

Today's violence marked the epic fail of that lunatic Barack Obama's appeasement policy

Two months until he is booted out and sanity returns to the American Government

Aye the sanity of having a Mormon clergyman in charge of the world's most powerful army. Can't wait for such sanity to lead the western world forward.

A teetotaler who watches Jersey Shore. He's on my list of people to make disappear when I become Lord Protector of Europe.

If that's what you base a decision to vote on

    I prefer more substantive issues
